Jefferson County Open School (JCOS) is the original public option school in Jefferson County and is currently located in Lakewood, Colorado. For over fifty years, the Open School has provided a viable, vibrant, and life-changing alternative to conventional schooling. JCOS features a pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade environment with multi-aged groupings throughout the school. Students at all levels of the program work closely with their family and advisor to develop a highly personalized curri…
culum. Students are supported by their advisor to take the personal, social, and intellectual risks necessary to discover the joy of life-long learning. This highly individualized, student-centered model of schooling has not traditionally been aligned with a grade leveled and benchmarked model which assumes all students will know a specific set of skills and facts in a synchronous fashion. As a result, there is greater variability in student performance on standardized measures; however, JCOS continues to maintain a Performance ranking. The Open School model has resulted in consistently favorable performance on the annual Jeffco Listens Student Survey, which measures school culture and climate. In the most recent survey, JCOS Secondary outperformed our school district in six out of the seven categories measured. On a national level, Open School rates in the 80 - 99th%tile in four of the six categories measured at a national level.
