Founded in 1885 and located within Arapahoe and Adams counties, Aurora Public Schools (APS) is the 5th largest school district in the state of Colorado. There are 59 schools and 4 programs in the district: 5 early childhood education schools, 20 elementary schools, 9 P-8 schools, 5 middle schools, 1 combined middle/high school, 5 comprehensive high schools, 4 magnet schools, 1 vocational/technical college, 9 charter schools, 2 magnet high school programs, 1 online program, and 1 home school supp… ort program. The total student enrollment in preschool through twelfth grade is more than 38,000 students with a population that includes 56.4% Hispanic, 17.3% Black, 14.0% White, 4.9% Asian, 5.8% two or more races, 1% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander and 0.6% American Indian or Alaska Native. Forty-two percent (42%) of APS's K-12 students are second-language learners who speak over 160 different languages. Seventy-four-point-six percent (74.6%) percent of APS students participate in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. Aurora Public Schools has made noteworthy improvements in recent years and is launching its new strategic plan Destination APS. Destination APS has four priorities: Academic Achievement & Postsecondary Readiness, Collaborative & Inclusive Community, Safety and Quality Talent. The Board of Education has also directed the district to ensure that it meets student outcome goals as outlined through its four results for early literacy, high school graduation, and equity with specific percentage goals for 6th and 9th grade Black and Hispanic/Latinx students. In addition, the Board has outlined limitations that specify how the school system will behave as it seeks to accomplish its results.
