The New America School?Lakewood (NAS?Lakewood), opened in 2006, is an alternative education public charter school authorized by Jefferson County Public Schools. The school?s mission is to empower new immigrants, English Language Learners, and academically underserved students with the academic skills, language development, and personalized supports needed to graduate high school and pursue meaningful futures. NAS?Lakewood is designated as both a Title I school and an Alternative Education Campus…
(AEC) under C.R.S. 22-7-604.5, which defines an AEC as a school in which at least 90 percent of students meet one or more ?high-risk? criteria. At NAS?Lakewood, nearly all students qualify as high risk, often entering the school over-age and under-credit, as new immigrants to the United States, or with prior interruptions in their education. Many are balancing school with employment and family responsibilities. This designation reflects the school?s commitment to serving students who need flexible opportunities to re-engage with education. To meet these needs, NAS?Lakewood offers extended-day scheduling, small class sizes, and individualized supports. Students have access to credit recovery, concurrent enrollment with local colleges, and opportunities to earn industry certificates. Instruction is designed to strengthen literacy, mathematics, and postsecondary readiness, while teachers embed strategies to support multilingual learners across all content areas. The school culture emphasizes strong staff?student relationships, restorative practices, and social-emotional learning. Wraparound supports include counseling services, community partnerships, and college and career planning. Concurrent enrollment opportunities expand students? access to rigorous learning and postsecondary credit. NAS?Lakewood?s improvement planning process is collaborative and data-driven, involving staff, families, and the broader NAS network. Leadership and instructional staff meet regularly to review performance, identify challenges, and monitor progress toward goals. This process ensures that improvement strategies remain responsive to student needs and aligned with the school?s mission. Through its specialized programming, supportive culture, and statutory designation as an AEC, NAS?Lakewood provides students with the opportunity to overcome barriers, earn a high school diploma, and pursue success in college, career, and life.
