About Cheraw 31 (2560)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Cheraw 31

2024-2025

Cheraw School District is located in southeastern Colorado in Otero County. The rural town of Cheraw is located off of CO-109 approximately 10 miles north of La Junta (the most populous city in the county) and approximately 70 miles east of Pueblo (the closet large city with access to Interstate 25). This area of Colorado is normally warm, and sunny with approximately 250 sunny days in a year. Temperatures range from 100 degrees Fahrenheit on summer days, and as low as 15 degrees Fahrenheit on t… he coldest days in the winter. On average, Cheraw receives 13 inches of rain per year, and 30 inches of snowfall on average in the winter, with the lowest monthly precipitation in October. The present town of Cheraw is primarily a small farming community with one post office, three churches, and some small businesses. Cheraw was founded in 1906 in part due to the construction of railroad lines through the area, and was named in honor of Colonel Wiley whose hometown was Cheraw, South Carolina. Mr. Beamer, the original owner of the land, said that if there was ever alcohol sold in Cheraw, the town would lose the deed to the land, and the land would revert back to his heirs. In the 1970's, Cheraw purportedly raised, processed, and sold more turkeys than anywhere else in the world, and became known for being the ''Turkey Capital of the World''. This industry closed in the early 1970?s, and most of the former turkey ranchers now raise cattle, hogs, corn, and/or alfalfa hay. A total of 200+ Pre-K through High School students enroll in Cheraw Schools each year. Roughly 50% of students qualify for Free/Reduced lunches. About 75% of students consider themselves to be white and 50% of students reside outside of school district boundaries.
