Description of School Setting: Edgewater Elementary is a 2-Way Dual Language neighborhood school in Edgewater, Colorado. Our school serves approximately 340 students in grades PK-6. Over 76% of our students identify as Hispanic or Latino, 16% white, 1% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander, 6% mixed race, 1% Black, 0% Asian, and 0% American Indian. Sixty-six percent of our students qualify for the Free/Reduced lunch program. However, we believe this percentage is lower than it should be due to th…
e fact that all students eat for free in Colorado. Additionally, 60% are Multilingual Learners, with Spanish being the home language of all but 10 of our MLs. Other language backgrounds include Somali, Arabic, Bosnian, Mandarin, Chuukese, and Palauan. Edgewater Elementary offers a full range of academic services and supports to meet the educational and socioemotional needs of our students. We draw in students from across Jeffco and Denver, with 53% of our students Choicing in to our school, with 47% living in our boundaries, and 42% of our neighborhood students Choice Out. From PreK through 6th grade, we offer a Two-Way Dual Language Program (Spanish and English) to all students, with 90% Spanish and 10% English instruction in PreK. In Kindergarten through 6th grade the program provides instruction that is 50% in Spanish and 50% in English. This is the first school-year that our 2-Way Program is offered throughout our school, as we were in transition from a 1-Way Dual Language Program that served only Spanish speakers and an All English Program for all other students. In addition to our teachers who teach in the Spanish environment, a high percentage of other teachers and staff are bilingual, including Administration, Special Education staff, other teachers, paraprofessionals, kitchen staff, front office staff, and more. In partnership with Edgewater Collective and Edgewater Recreation Center we offer a variety of before and after school programs to engage our students in other opportunities. At this time, we offer activities that are of interest and culturally responsive to many students, such as Ballet Folklorico, Balon Soccer, Gardening Club, Crochet Club, Martial Arts, Art Club, and Basketball. In addition, we provide before and after school care for students that need this service. For family engagement opportunities, we have an active PTA, School Accountability Committee, and other volunteer opportunities. Also, our school Administration holds monthly Cafecitos with our families that allows us to gather feedback and offer information.
