About Valdez Elementary School (0408)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Valdez Elementary School

2025-2026

Mission Statement : Valdez Elementary School commits to equity through Dual Language Immersion and culturally relevant, individualized education for all learners.  Vision Statements:  Dual Language Immersion: closing the achievement gap and increasing equity by creating authentic, research-based education for all students, in order that they experience both sociolinguistic and academic success in two languages together.  Commitment to Community and Culture: creating a community together that wor… ks towards an equitable society by valuing the culture and identities of all community members.  High Expectations for Academic Success: providing authentic, personalized learning through intentional, collaborative, data-driven planning to create meaningful and lasting academic success.  We are a dual language ECE-5th grade school with about 400 students located in North Denver. Valdez has a dual language immersion (Spanish and English) program throughout all of our grade levels. We strive to maintain 50% Native Spanish speakers and 50% Native English speakers throughout the grade levels, and graduate all students from our program bilingual and bi-literate.  Our program starts at 3 years old and goes through 5th grade.  We have 5 ECE classrooms, and 2 classrooms each grade level Kindergarten-5th grades.  Our teacher retention rate is about 85%.  We have a Principal, Assistant Principal, and 2 Teacher Leaders.  We added a Teacher Leadership and Collaboration Program 5 years ago, which brought two teachers into half-time teaching and half-time coaching roles as well as additional positions to our school.  Our leadership team has been in place for 4 years.  Our principal has been at the school for 14 years.  We currently do not have any major grants. In years past, we were green on the DPS School Performance Framework, with high growth scores across 4th and 5th grades in both literacy and math. This past year we had insufficient data for our CDE rating. Valdez has before and after school programs through Discovery Link, including a volunteer run Enrichment program in the fall and the spring. We utilize Investigations Math, and EL Literacy curricula and Amplify CKLA/Caminos Reading and Writing.  We use Dibels for literacy progress monitoring and READ Act in K-3rd grades, Illuminate interim assessments for 3rd-5th grades, benchmark assessments for Math, TSGold for ECE, and CMAS for statewide assessments.   At the beginning of the school year, we spent a ½ day digging into and analyzing our data as a whole staff.  Under the guidance of the principal, assistant principal and teacher leaders, we looked at literacy scores, READ Act data, last year?s interim scores, Access data, and our Science CMAS data.  We identified growth in our past status and growth scores in reading, writing and math in CMAS as areas to celebrate and our growth scores as an area to improve.  We noted that we need to continue to improve our gaps in both literacy and math.    After that work with the whole staff, we worked as our leadership team to identify trends and re-visit root causes.  We also met as a Collaborative School Committee (CSC) including parents and teachers and analyzed trends, priorities, and root causes.
