Girls Athletic Leadership School Middle School
2025-2026
The Girls Athletic Leadership School (GALS) is a public charter school in Denver, serving 225-250 students each year. As the only public all-girls school in Colorado, GALS serves middle school girls and non-binary youth by focusing on rigorous academics, social-emotional health, and movement based learning. The academic program at GALS centers on standards-based learning designed to meet student needs through individualized and differentiated learning. Classrooms at GALS are engaged spaces where…
learners do the majority of the thinking, reading, writing, and problem solving, and students receive explicit skill-based instruction that they apply in a variety of situations. In addition to their inclusive core classes, all students are enrolled in an academic support class designed to meet their unique needs - be it intervention, on grade level support, or acceleration. On Wednesdays, students have an Elective Project class where they get to choose a subject of interest for one quarter to learn about and investigate, and present their work to the community. To meet students' social-emotional needs, GALS utilizes a core content class we call "GALS Series," guided by the CASEL standards. This course happens daily, and the curriculum encourages students to explore their identities, beliefs, and values while they develop strong skills in self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. In GALS Series, students reflect and discuss topics like self-exploration, leadership, friendship, boundaries, communication, and sexual health. The foundation of GALS pedagogy is movement. Students begin each day with 45 minutes of physical activity, and over the course of the year explore units from running to Ultimate Frisbee, pickleball to golf, yoga to dancing. In every class, movement is utilized as a tool to enhance their learning - be it in short brain boosts to regulate their energy and engagement, kinesthetic practice to reinforce learning, or content-embedded movement to teach them BY and THROUGH movement. Imagine learning about linear relationships by jump roping for time and graphing your results, or investigating the Oregon Trail by completing a simulation in our surrounding neighborhood! The mission of GALS is to empower students to succeed academically, lead confidently, live boldly and thrive physically. We provide an environment that fosters the academic mastery and personal development necessary for every student to become a powerful advocate for themselves and a leader in their community. The key to doing that is to provide strong academic practices alongside community development and joy, and GALS does this daily to ensure every student succeeds.
