Wyatt Academy is a K-5 community school where students thrive socially, emotionally, and academically. By cultivating an environment that supports community, opportunity, joy and wonder, we nurture students to reach their full potential. Serving the Cole/Whittier neighborhood since we reopened in 1998, Wyatt is a staple in the community as an institution of learning and a hub of community resources. Wyatt opened its doors in 1887 but re-opened in 1998 as a community-led initiative that began wit…
h neighborhood groups and activists demanding a high-quality school in the abandoned school building at 3620 Franklin St. In 2024, the Wyatt Board considered closing Wyatt however, the board did not have enough votes to complete this resolution. Today, Wyatt still remains open and the mission remains the same. We are committed to offering our community a world-class education, community resources, and wraparound support. At Wyatt, we nurture the whole child to support each child's social- emotional and academic components, including their family's' basic needs. Phenomenal academic programming is at the core of what we do. Additionally, every Wyatt student receives music, PE, and spanish instruction aligned with Common Core standards. For the first time this year, we have a heritage Spanish class to support our students whose home language is Spanish to support their bi-literacy development. Our inquiry-based courses lead to better content retention and instill a lasting love of learning. Our model is unique because we don?t stop there. We understand that student success depends on more than just academics. That?s why we provide the essentials the children and their families need to reach their full potential. Our Family Empowerment Center provides wraparound services, including a laundromat, food pantry, and clothing boutique, to families and the broader Cole/Whittier community. The Family Empowerment Center has changed our school and community hub operations. Our school culture is founded upon restorative practices in each facet of our programming. Our staff is dedicated to ensuring that each student is celebrated for their achievements and that every interaction is encountered through the inclusion lens for all community members. We at Wyatt have an intentional mindset geared toward enhancing the student and family experience. We value our families and community members as partners in decision-making within the school. Our school takes a constructivist, inquiry-based approach to instruction and utilizes data-driven practices to advance mastery of grade-level content.  We celebrate our students' and their successes demonstrating our core-values through a weekly community-wide meeting. Key program components include Benchmark Advance (Literacy K-5), Illustrative Mathematics (Math K-5), EL Achieve (ELD K-5), Special Education, Physical Education, Modern Band (Music K-5), Intervention via SIPPS (K-5), and Listos! Spanish Instruction (K-5). Assessment strategies include formative and summative assessments created by the teacher and vendor. We have mandated that our instructors deliver formative assessments daily and summative assessments at the end of each module. Benchmark phonics assesses our students every week. Our upper elementary grades work through a word study weekly so students master encoding and decoding multisyllabic words. Instructors also utilize i-Ready growth checks and diagnostics to assess ELA and Math achievement and growth. Formative and summative assessments are given in ELD, Music, Physical Education, and Spanish. Based on this year's results, the leadership team has implemented several changes to professional learning and coaching for all staff.
