About Aurora Hills Middle School (0464)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Aurora Hills Middle School

2025-2026

Overview: Aurora Hills Middle School is a comprehensive middle school in Aurora Public Schools. Aurora Hills uniquely meets the needs of all students by ensuring access to a well rounded education for every student. Aurora Hills offers every student rigorous and engaging core content instruction as well as a wide variety of exploratory curriculum. Students are encouraged to explore a variety of potential career pathways as they prepare to enter high school. Furthermore, we have created a schedul… e that provides staff with extensive time for professional development, student work analysis/ re-teach/extension, collaborative planning, and ongoing observation/feedback cycles. As a school, we continue to prioritize student discourse through Kagan cooperative learning structures, aspects of math rigor, and the close reading of grade-level texts. Demographics: Aurora Hills Middle School is a 6th-8th-grade campus that serves students of diverse educational and socio-economic backgrounds. Aurora Hills is a school that serves 894 students. The student demographics include: 76% free lunch and an 8% reduced lunch rate; 93% of students are minorities, 62% of our students are Hispanic, 17% are Black; roughly 64% of our students are English language learners; 17% of the students receive Special Education services. Program Design: Aurora Hills offers rigorous classes in mathematics and literacy and is in the fifth year of implementing the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program targeting college readiness. There are 72 certified staff and 8 Classified staff members at Aurora Hills. Aurora Hills Middle School was the first middle school in the Aurora Public School district to launch a brand-new schedule and learning design for the 2018-19 school year in an effort to improve student performance, engagement and equity, and add new cross-curricular learning opportunities. During the pandemic, our scheduling had to change, but for the 2021-22 school year Aurora Hills has returned back to this innovative scheduling to close achievement gaps and accelerate learning and has continued this 2024-25 school year. This schedule includes an advisory period, core academic classes four days a week, and students participating in ''PLUS'' programming once a week. PLUS programs are taught by expert staff and include courses such as STEM, Art, business and entrepreneurship, and General Music and students participate in one elective every day of the week. While one grade-level team at a time participates in PLUS programming, the core classroom teachers for that grade will participate in a full day of lesson planning, data analysis, and professional development dubbed Mustang U. In addition to the Principal, there are three Assistant Principals, each housed in one grade level. Each grade level has a team of the Assistant Principal, Grade level Dean of Students, and a grade level counselor. There is also an Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) and a Building Council. The instructional leadership team is composed of teacher leaders and an admin team who collaborate to focus on the improvement of teaching and learning. This team will collaborate to identify teaching and learning challenges and support teachers to solve those challenges, then teachers will be better able to improve their instructional practices. And students?especially students not making progress?will be able to learn at higher levels. This team meets bi-weekly for an hour. The Building Council consists of elected members of all of our staff who come together with the principal to help create a productive and healthy building environment. Members are made up of teachers and one classified representative.
