AXL was started with the intent to bring revolutionary ideas to a diverse and underserved population lacking choices in education. Beginning in an area with traditional schools and classrooms, and punitive-based discipline systems, AXL introduced Expeditionary Learning (EL) to the community. EL was commonly centered in affluent suburban communities and AXL was the first school in Aurora, Colorado to provide an EL model from PK-8th grade. s initiative to Sable Elementary's surrounding community. AXL has earned the highest state rating for 6 years in a row and is the only school to offer EL to middle school age groups. With a long-term strategic focus, AXL, alongside APS, will be able to continue providing Expeditionary Learning to Aurora's scholars and provide real connections so every scholar can be empowered, be engaged and achieve. AXL wishes to lease the Sable building and will provide the community a high quality, tuition free Pre- K through 8th grade experience. AXL's academic programming and core values coincide with those of APS and the community. At AXL, we focus on providing a well rounded education, where our curriculum makes standards come alive for scholars by connecting learning to real-world issues. Academically rigorous, project-based learning expeditions, case studies, projects, fieldwork, and service learning inspire scholars to think and work as professionals, contributing high-quality work to authentic audiences beyond the classroom. We believe the world is the classroom and that all have exponential potential to thrive.
