About Jackson Elementary School (4358)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Jackson Elementary School

2025-2026

Andrew Jackson Elementary School opened in the fall of 1965. We are a growing, but highly mobile, west-side school with a current enrollment of around 360 students grades K-5. Andrew Jackson also has two preschool programs with over 45 students in both programs. Over the years, our student population has increased due to the changing neighborhood and nearby school closures. We are a school who has absorbed three other elementary schools over the past 14 years due to school closures. After the cl… osure of Pike Elementary in 2008, we went from being a neighborhood school to a school needing student busing. Fourteen years ago, an additional wing was built onto Jackson to accommodate the extra students from Pike. Ten school years ago, we received 140 additional students, 90+ from Lincoln and Bates Elementary Schools, that closed their doors at the end of the 2012-2013 school year. Six years ago, we again grew with an additional 60 students. The rest of our new students have recently moved into our neighborhood, but mostly in the local motels, trailer parks, and temporary housing, thus creating a high-mobility population. During the 2016-2017 school year, Jackson Elementary became an AVID (Advancement via Individual Determination) Certified school. AVID strategies are embedded into all lessons and levels of instruction. A school site team leads professional development during the embedded PLC meetings to support teachers in meeting the needs of all of our students. AVID strategies are used in every content area throughout the school. All new staff are trained in AVID Foundations each year and new AVID strategies are incorporated into all Professional Development opportunities. We focus on student agency as a main component of student growth and collaboration. Students take ownership of their learning, set goals for their academics and social-emotional learning, and partnerships to increase knowledge. Teachers flexibly group students according to academic need and some groups may receive small group instruction with another teacher, either within the grade level or across grade level. Students who are identified as performing below grade level may receive supplemental small group reading and/or math instruction in addition to the classroom instruction. Likewise, students who are identified as Gifted and Talented may receive additional enrichment opportunities within or outside of the homeroom classroom. All students are scheduled to participate in specials classes such as Vocal Music, PE, and Art. Parents/Guardians may choose to have their 4 or 5 grade student participate in instrumental music instruction after the school day, while 4th grade students also all learn how to play the violin during the school day. Jackson is a Title I school with a high mobility rate. Therefore, Jackson hires only highly qualified/trained teachers using quality programs to meet the needs of all students with a strong focus on students below grade level. Our free and reduced population has increased every year. In 2011 we began as a Targeted Title I School at 74.5% Free and Reduced Lunch. Currently, we are around 84-86% Free and Reduced lunch. Our current demographics are listed as: 40% Hispanic, 40% White, 11% Black, and less than 1% for Two or More Races, Pacific Islander, Alaskan Native and Asian.
