About Orton Academy (1892)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Orton Academy

2024-2025

Orton Academy is a tuition-free public charter school for 2nd-8th grade located in central Colorado Springs and newly under the authorization of D11. Orton Academy is the second free public school in Colorado to serve only students with a profile of dyslexia. In addition, many of the students have co-morbid issues such as dysgraphia, dyscalculia, working memory issues, ADHD, anxiety, executive function deficits, and poor self-esteem. Orton Academy cultivates an inclusive environment where learni… ng is accessible to students with a dyslexic profile and reading and written language difficulties. By removing reading barriers and providing dyslexia appropriate core instruction and dyslexia therapy firmly rooted in the Science of Reading, Orton Academy allows students to not only increase their access to written language, but to also increase their access to a more fulfilling life experience. All students at Orton Academy receive daily 55 minute dyslexia therapy sessions in a small group setting. The Certified Academic Language/Dyslexia Therapists/Therapists-in-Training deliver Take Flight: A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia, a program developed by the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at the Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, Texas. This is an intense Orton-Gillingham based program that addresses all components of reading, including: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency, and basic comprehension. Dyslexia is a lifelong struggle. No program or school can cure dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia for a child. Orton Academy and the Take Flight therapy will not only help students learn to read, but enable these students to develop the strategies, skills, and tools necessary to be academically and occupationally successful into adulthood. Students with dyslexia and its comorbidities may always struggle to conquer the written word with the same fluency as their peers, but after successfully completing the Take Flight therapy curriculum, they will no longer be defined by their reading struggles or the belief that they are lazy or unintelligent. Orton Academy recognizes that students with dyslexia exhibit neurodiversity and need to be provided instruction in the manner in which their brains learn, and need to demonstrate knowledge in ways that do not rely on written language. Dyslexia is not a disability - the traditional education system makes it disabling. Orton Academy is dedicated to providing appropriate education to this special population of often brilliant learners.
