A MESSAGE FROM:

Monroe Elementary School

2024-2025

James Monroe Elementary School is a community-based, neighborhood school located on the corner of Chelton and Pikes Peak, in SE Colorado Springs. Monroe serves 360 students in PreK-5. We also partner with Headstart to provide increased access to early learning opportunities. As a school, our primary focus is the academic and socio-emotional success of our students. We have a rigorous academic program with an increased focus on the science of reading and conceptual learning in mathematics. We hav… e received a ?Performance? rating for several years, with median growth scores above state averages in ELA and Math. For 22-23 school year, we had an "Improvement" rating; however, we continue to see steady academic growth. We also offer a full suite of SEL programming including Tier 1 classroom lessons, Tier 2 school counselor supports and a partnership with the Children's Hospital to provide in-building mental health support. We utilize a school-wide model for supporting our community, called "Capturing Kids Hearts (CKH)." This approach to relationship building allows us to nurture the individual needs of our students while helping each child own his or her choices. We have been recognized as a CKH National Showcase School for the past three years. We are a Title I school due to our high percentage of Free Lunch students (>90%). 20% of our students qualify for ELL support within their instructional program, and our ethnic population consists of: 25% White, 8% African American and 59.3% Hispanic students. 15.8% of our students qualify for Special Education, with our largest SPED education need being Speech/Language. 0.2% of our population in grades 3-5 are identified as Gifted and Talented.
