Partnerships with organizations such as The High Trails, MESO, CaveSim, Bear Creek Nature Center, Fountain Creek Nature Center, Flying Pig Ranch, Garden of the Gods, and the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society deepen these experiences, connecting students to hands-on, real-world learning. Our outdoor learning mission is rooted in the belief that through relationships with the natural world, we cultivate: Health and well-being Academic performance Stewardship of nature and community Beyond outdoor learning, Howbert provides high-quality academic instruction and a strong focus on social, emotional, and cognitive learning (SECL) to support the development of the whole child. Students are equipped not only with academic knowledge and skills across content areas but also with the interpersonal tools to build positive relationships with peers and staff. Howbert Elementary is designated as a Regional Targeted Support site for students with dyslexia or dyslexia tendencies. The school earned the Colorado Governor?s Distinguished Improvement Award (2023) and was accredited with distinction by the Colorado Springs School Board in both 2022 and 2023 . The school?s School Performance Framework (SPF) rating for 2024?2025 was 69.5% , reflecting strong academic growth and achievement. Enrollment and Demographics Enrollment at Howbert has remained stable over time, with the exception of a temporary decline during the pandemic. Current enrollment for the 2025-2026 school year is 277 students (Pre-K?5). Howbert Elementary is located in the Pleasant Valley neighborhood, adjacent to Garden of the Gods Park and historic Rock Ledge Ranch. Families within the school?s boundaries are predominantly white, married couples with higher education degrees, white-collar employment, and above-average household incomes. Students permitting into Howbert from outside the neighborhood boundaries represent 45% of the total student population. The student population is relatively homogeneous in ethnicity, with 71% White, 21% Hispanic, 2% Black or African American, and 5% multi-ethnic. English Language Learners comprise less than 1% of enrollment. Howbert students receiving special education services account for 14% of the student population. Staff Profile Howbert Elementary employs 50 certified and paraprofessional staff members. The staff is predominantly white and female, with 62% certified educators and 38% paraprofessionals. Staff retention has remained strong, contributing to a stable and collaborative school culture.
