A MESSAGE FROM:

Academy International Elementary School

2022-2023

Academy International Elementary School (AIES) is located in northeastern Colorado Springs in the Briargate community. It is a neighborhood/choice school offering the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IBPYP), authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization. AIES is one of more than 1,000 International Baccalaureate elementary schools in the world and was the first public IBPYP school in the Americas. AIES has been the recipient of the John Irwin School of Excellence… Award every year offered since the school opened in 1998. As one of the highest achieving schools in the district, AIES is consistently recognized as a school of excellence due to academic achievement and growth. Rigorous academics, a focus on individual students, high levels of family engagement, and dedicated teachers ensure the school earns top ratings for school performance by the Colorado Department of Education. Because AIES is recognized as a school of excellence, there is a large number of families (68%) that choice their students into AIES from inside and outside the boundaries of Academy District 20 . The mission of the school is: Academy International Elementary, an International Baccalaureate, English and French language school, equips students of all abilities in a safe and nurturing environment to achieve their unique potential while becoming responsible global citizens. The vision is to maximize the academic, social, and emotional learning of all students. AIES is proud of its international connections. The school has a diverse population with 37% minority students attending. Additionally, 8 % of our students are English Language Learners. As an English as Second Language (ESL) Magnet school, our school community has over 20 languages represented among our students. There is deep pride of heritage and respect across campus, and students enthusiastically engage in learning about cultures through events, coursework and interactions with their classmates. Academy International attracts families looking for a school with a global perspective and/or offering the French language. We have a diverse staff representative of varied cultures, languages and experiences. The curriculum has a global and transdisciplinary focus; it is based on inquiry and best practices. All students receive French language instruction. A partial French Immersion option is offered to students in first grade through fifth grade where students continue math, science and social studies coursework in French. Academy International is proud to be a Dyslexia Satellite School. We have two Certified Academic Language Practitioners (CALPs) on site who work with students who have characteristics of dyslexia. They provide students therapy using Take Flight, a comprehensive intervention curriculum that contains the five components of effective reading instruction (Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency and Reading Comprehension). In order to develop the UIP, the Academy International Elementary School administrative team collaborated to review data, identified root causes, developed improvement strategies and outlined action plans. The administrative team presents the UIP to our Building Leadership Team and our School Accountability Team for further collaboration and review.
