About Prairie Middle School (7158)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Prairie Middle School

2025-2026

Prairie Middle School has traditionally been the largest middle school in Colorado and serves a diverse population within the Cherry Creek School District. Our 1500 students (approximate) are 40% Hispanic, 30% Black, 20%, 5% Asian, and 5% mixed race. Prairie Middle School has a proud history in Aurora, CO. It is the only middle school that feeds into Overland High School. Overland and Prairie share the same campus that is lovingly called the ?O-Zone.? All six elementary schools that feed into Pr… airie are Title One. Approximately 72% of students who attend Prairie qualify for free and reduced lunch. Approximately 1/3 of students are multilingual. Over the last couple of years, there was a significant increase of newcomers (students who are new to the U.S. without any knowledge of the English language) per year. Prairie traditionally served between 100-150 newcomers. Prairie could be considered an international school as it serves students who speak many languages and who are from all over the world. Prairie Middle School has students with unique skills, traits, talents, and brilliance. There is a huge need to build upon the strengths of the community. Going into the 2025-2026 SY, Prairie is labeled Priority Improvement. Previously, Prairie was given the Connect for Success/EASI grant to help with turnaround efforts. The CFS report named a need for common language, PBIS structures, alignment in goals, use of data, and a focus on instruction. Prairie has improved significantly over the last two years. There have been significant reductions in referrals, expulsions, and suspensions due to the creation of a positive culture with high expectations. Parent surveys have demonstrated a significant increase in satisfaction. In addition, there has been obvious growth in data, to include the SPF, due to the focus on instruction and schoolwide literacy plan. Growth in data can be attributed to change in culture, the schoolwide literacy approach, and a focus on instructional leadership by administration. Our Instructional Leadership Team, comprised of teacher leaders, created this improvement plan.
