About North Routt Community Charter School (6363)

A MESSAGE FROM:

North Routt Community Charter School

2024-2025

North Routt Community Charter School is a K-8 free public charter school located in rural Clark, CO. Our charter is authorized through the Steamboat Springs School District. We currently serve 83 full time students and 7 students through our homeschool enrichment program. Our mission statement is to "Challenge students to thrive beyond 4 walls through personalized academic learning, stewardship, the arts, and outdoor discovery". We strive to meet all tenets of this mission statement through our … daily programming. Our school is structured through the use of multi-age classrooms where students learn the importance of leadership and mentor the younger students. For example the first graders guide the kindergartners through the beginning of the year to build confidence and familiarity with the routines and protocols. Due to this multi-age structure we heavily embrace differentiation through small group instruction in our literacy blocks and content areas. We use assessments such as DIBELS to drive decisions around small group instruction but we inventory all of our students through informal classroom assessments and observations. Our philosophy is that all students are worthy and capable of achieving at a high level. Our small class sizes allow the teachers to work closely with all students and to understand how to best support their growth and development. One of the most important things to know about NRCCS is our commitment to outdoor education and wellness (OEW) trips. 50% of our Fridays are spent outside of the school. We live in a remote area of Routt County and have easy access to all types of outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and all types of skiing. This program allows the students to practice their character trait development outside of the classroom. This program builds grit, collaboration, integrity, and respect. At NRCCS we believe that it is important to help students build physical and emotional skills right alongside their academics. Social and Emotional Learning concepts are explicitly taught every morning in the student?s Crew class for 30 minutes. We have an SEL committee that is paid a stipend to create these lessons. These lessons focus on the 10 character traits of NRCCS. Student engage in lessons that examine how to use integrity in tough situations, how to respect all individuals and their differences, how to use grit to dig deep and try hard, and how to use collaboration and craftsmanship to produce high quality products that are then displayed in a public setting called the Celebration of Learning. We notice that students regularly have the language now to engage in hard conversations and to build bridges with their peers and adults when conflict arises. We are producing well rounded members of our community that can do more than math equations. The students at NRCCS achieve and grow academically at a high level as evidenced by their CMAS data. This is just one piece to educating the whole child. We are so much more!
