Yampa Valley High School is an Alternative Education Campus (AEC) in Steamboat Springs School District. At least 90% of YVHS students are deemed at-risk in accordance with the Colorado Department of Education's assurances. There are currently 32 students enrolled at YVHS, 5 of whom are 100% online and 27 are in person. Four of these students are concurrently enrolled at Colorado Mountain College, 4 take supplemental online courses, and 7 students participate in innovative learning opportunities … such as work-based learning or internships. YVHS has a small student body with diverse backgrounds and intense needs, as 37.5% of students have an IEP, 37.5% are Emergent Bilinguals, 47% are on free or reduced lunch, 31% are behind on credits, and 19% receive gifted education services. Our school differentiates from the traditional high school with low student-to-staff ratios, restorative justice, and trauma-informed practices, individualized pathways, and project-based learning units. Students who have not been successful in a traditional high school often thrive at YVHS due to the safe and intimate environment with a focus upon relationships for the best school climate. Teachers adjust instruction to support student interests and abilities, and our counselor-to-student ratio allows for greater support that leads to increased interpersonal skills and overall well-being. Yampa Valley High School has had a larger enrollment for the past three years. Our unified improvement plan is aimed at increasing student autonomy and performance through increased mental health supports, attendance, and academic achievement and growth.
