About Nettie S Freed K-8 Expeditionary School (7217)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Nettie S Freed K-8 Expeditionary School

2025-2026

Nettie S. Freed K-8 Expeditionary is a new school. We opened in the Fall of 2023. We are located on the northside of Pueblo and were built on the site of a previous school that had been torn down several years ago. We are encircled by residential housing on two sides, the district facilities center on another, and a historic cemetery on the final side. We just added eighth grade for our third year, and are near our full capacity. Our current year has three sections of Kindergarten, first grade, … fourth grade, fifth grade, sixth grade, seventh grade, and eighth grade. All other grades have 2 sections. We will continue to add additional sections at few remaining grade levels until we are at three sections in all grades. In order to support our identity as an expeditionary school, we have partnered with EL Education. Through this partnership, our teachers have received additional professional development in order to implement the EL ELA curriculum, and all our other curricula, using the procedures and protocols that have been developed and proven in EL schools across the country. We will also be supplementing K-2 reading instruction using a curriculum that supports foundational literacy skills. Our partnership will continue to provide support for teachers and administrators through our initial year, and the years to come. Few of our teachers have experience in expeditionary education, so this training has been vital to our preparation. Our teaching staff has a balance of new teachers and veteran teachers. Of our 40 teachers, 10 are in their first or second year of teaching. Our student count sits at just under 550 students. Of that number, 56% identify as Hispanic, 34% identify as white, and the remaining students identify as small percentages of American Indian, Black, and multiple races. 71% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. 8% of our students are identified as gifted and talented, and 16% are on an IEP. Fewer than 2% of our students are considered non-English speaking learners.
