About Carmel Community School (1306)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Carmel Community School

2025-2026

Carmel Community School is a K-8 school located in the southeastern portion of Colorado Springs. Carmel Community School has a returning principal and an assistant principal, a new assistant principal and dean of restorative practices. CCS has a 20-minute daily advisory program that allows teachers and students to work together to develop positive relationships, focus on social-emotional growth and executive functioning skills. Harrison School District Two schools utilize CKLA for K-5 literacy, … Into Literacy for 6-8 ELA, and Eureka Squared for K-8 math. K-5 students are also supported in literacy through the Early Literacy Grant. Students in grades 6-8 now have access to daily intervention and extension in reading and math during first period using research-based interventions. There is also an additional reading intervention class with an interventionist for students needing supports. Carmel is continuing our grant funded after school program, Elevate, which was launched last year. Elevate is a dynamic STEM and Math program that transforms learning into a hands-on adventure. Mondays are STEM Kick-Off Day. Local STEM partners provide a 1 1/2 hour of STEM programming. Partners and activities include robotics and engineer design activities, Cool Science, Challenger, and Catamount. Tuesday- Thursday include 40-minute rotation of math tutoring and hands on STEM activities. Carmel currently had 89 students enrolled with 14 staff members assisting. Carmel Community School utilizes Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) to help prepare our students in their pursuit of college readiness in grades 3 through 8. We strive to embed AVID strategies school-wide and focus on organization, the use of binders and require teachers and students to utilize focused note-taking, annotation methods, collaborative engagement strategies, and school-wide writing strategies. Student voice is at the forefront at Carmel Community School. Twenty 8th graders engaged as WEB leaders (Where Everyone Belongs). WEB leaders plan and facilitate orientation for incoming 6th graders each summer, onboard new students, help to plan and deliver presentations at quarterly SAC meetings. A select group of students are also represented on Carmel's Principal Advisory Council which also includes a cross-section of staff. Carmel Community School is a true community school and is in year four of implementing the six pillars of a community school. CCS is supported through many partnerships that look to enrich teaching and learning at the school and community levels. We offer opportunities for families to participate through volunteer opportunities, Back-to School night, student-led parent/teacher conferences, quarterly math and literacy family nights, quarterly student celebrations, and building Town Hall meetings. Monthly Parent Power Hours have been implemented this year to further support the connection between home and school. We keep families informed through Class Dojo, monthly online newsletters, social media and school website. Carmel Community School hosts a Student Success Center that is staffed two behavior support personnel. We are able to expand social/emotional learning supports in an alternative effort to reduce Level 1 & 2 office referrals and decrease suspensions in grades 6-8. The Student Success Center is based on the premise that a student does not have the social, emotional and/or behavioral skills necessary to demonstrate appropriate school behavior, require additional practice or re-teaching of healthy social and emotional skills to be successful. This program recognizes the impact of trauma on our students' mental health and emotional functioning.
