Founded in 2009, Atlas is a public, urban charter school that currently serves 1,250 students. It is a highly diverse demographic comprised of 85% Hispanic, 6% Caucasian, 5% African-American and 3% Two or More Races. Nearly 93% of students are on free or reduced lunch and many come from an impoverished family. Almost 54% of students qualify for English learner supports. Atlas was originally created to prepare academically underperforming low-income students for college and successful careers. It… is located in Harrison School District Two, a historically underserved and economically depressed area of the city populated with small strip malls, urban blight and a startling lack of physical community assets or quality school choice. Atlas? long-term investment in combating poverty and providing a sustainable, stable learning environment to all students goes beyond just allowing students to succeed. Atlas has fostered the belief that no matter what path students take to or beyond the school, they take the most important thing with them: the ability to be successful and become their highest potential.
