About Pomona Elementary School (7106)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Pomona Elementary School

2025-2026

Pomona Elementary school opened its doors in 1962 as a one-track school. Pomona is a neighborhood school that has served generations of residents, and continues to be a multigenerational school. Pomona is located in Montrose, CO on the Western Slope. This is located on our campus and draws in students from all over the district. Pomona Elementary School serves approximately 359 students in grades kindergarten through 5th (up 30 students from last year) . The school population is a 50/50 make-up … of male female students. 73% of PES students qualify for Free and Reduced lunches. Pomona enrollment is 56% white and 36% Hispanic. 19% of our kids are students with a disability and 8% are ESL. Pomona is also home to the district's elementary Affective Needs Special Education program. Currently, Pomona hosts 16 students in the AN program across all grade levels. Pomona is a School-Wide Title 1 school. We have 30 full time certified staff and 17 classified staff. MCSD has recently moved the Step Up to Life special education program for students aged 18-21 to the Pomona campus. As has been the case for all schools across the country, Pomona has had to deal with a shift in systems to accommodate needs brought on by a global pandemic. In the spring of 2020, Pomona shifted to online learning. To start the 2020-2021 school year, Pomona started with a majority of students in person and also provided an online option for families that chose to stay online. Mitigation strategies for COVID 19 have greatly impacted schedules and systems in the school including limiting team planning time and staffing models. To start the 21-22 school year, PES returned to full in-person learning with limited COVID-19 mitigation strategies in place (daily health screening; stringent sick policy; quarantines as necessary). Currently, we do not have major impacts with quarantines. The community is impacted by sickness and low attendance rates.   At the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year, Pomona dropped from Performance to Improvement. This trend continued on the 2017 SPF dropping Pomona to Priority Improvement. On the 2018 SPF, Pomona moved back up to Improvement Status. Currently, Pomona's SPF rating is Priority Improvement. Pomona is rated ''Approaching'' in academic achievement and ''Approaching'' for academic growth on the 2025 SPF. The overall score based on the 2025 SPF was 47.9 of 100 with 53 being the cut-point for a Performance rating.   PES was approved for an EASI Grant to bring in a CDE approved Diagnostic Review Team in 2018 and again in 2020 to dig into our school and help us find areas of strength and growth. Pomona utilized CDE's Turnaround Network supports through the 22-23 school year.   For 2025-26, the PES BLT determined the following goals and action steps: Goal 1: Improve family engagement, attendance rates and reduce interruptions to the learning environment: Develop a culture of excellence with a trauma healing lens. (Culture) Continue our work with CKH: Train new staff; CKH focus every PLP day, Mid year and end of year CKH implementation surveys and leadership checks Continue to provide improved SEL learning opportunities and develop self-regulation skills with weekly Character Strong lessons.   Continue to develop and provide opportunities for our families to connect with and engage in our PES community through the Rocky Mountain Family Engagement Collective PD work and Action Planning.   Utilize Talking Points as the primary communication tool with families.   Goal 2: Improve learning of the ELA and math standards as measured by proficiency scale aligned, assessments, DIBELS, MAP assessments and CMAS.
