About Outer Range (7169)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Outer Range

2025-2026

Outer Range is Montrose County School District?s public outdoor school of choice, serving students from preschool through ninth grade. Rooted in the belief that we reach our greatest capacity when we are learning through meaningful experiences in nature, our program blends academic growth with adventure, creativity, and community. Our mission?joyful, shared experiences created to awaken and inspire?guides everything we do. Through time spent outdoors, students develop confidence, curiosity, and … resilience. Faced with the unknown and ever-changing natural world, they learn to problem-solve, collaborate, and take responsibility for both their learning and their environment. Our interdisciplinary, project-based model connects learning to the local landscape. Students engage with driving questions that explore systems of reciprocity, water, and fire ecology?integrating Colorado Academic Standards with real-world applications. Outdoor expeditions, reflection, and portfolio assessments help students demonstrate growth across durable skills such as communication, adaptability, and self-awareness. Outer Range has demonstrated a two-year trend of improving student performance on both local and state measures, particularly in literacy and growth percentiles. These positive outcomes reinforce our direction and validate our instructional approach. For this reason, we are continuing with our current improvement goals, focusing on deepening consistency across classrooms, strengthening Tier 1 instruction, and refining our systems for differentiation and intervention within our project-based model. As Outer Range continues to expand its high school program, our commitment remains the same: to nurture whole learners who are deeply connected to place, to themselves, and to one another. The pulse of nature and the people near keep us rooted in what matters most?helping every student find purpose through the heartbeat beneath their feet.
