About New Legacy Charter School (6266)

A MESSAGE FROM:

New Legacy Charter School

2025-2026

New Legacy Charter School is a small, innovative school that serves pregnant and parenting teens and their children in northwest Aurora. We are in our 10th year of operation and currently serve approximately 95 high school students and 45 children ages 0-4. In our high school, around 50% of students are pregnant or parenting. We have a unique opportunity to impact two generations at a time by providing a high-quality, rigorous educational program for our teen parents as well as an on-site early … childhood education center where our students learn positive parenting skills and their children grow and thrive. Our high school offers a post-secondary focused culture, because we believe that continuing education in college or the workplace empowers students with knowledge and skills to pursue careers of their choice and achieve financial independence. In the past four years, New Legacy has been adjusting the instructional program to include more real world learning, including: internship-based learning, concurrent enrollment through the Community College of Aurora and Pickens Technical College, skilled trades apprenticeships, and many more opportunities for students to thrive academically while preparing for meaningful careers after graduation. Offering on-site childcare is a key component of effectively meeting the needs of teen parents. It removes a significant barrier to attendance, creates a hands-on educational environment in which young parents learn how to support their child?s development, and creates a high-quality early childhood educational experience for vulnerable children. Our two-generational approach is designed to break cycles of poverty for young families in Aurora and Denver. NLCS's students are 70% female and 30% male. During the 2024-2025 school year, 10% of our high school students were pregnant, 50% were parenting, 80% had a primary home language other than English, 72% were receiving English Language instruction, and 2% were refugees. Furthermore, 95% of families were eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch. The high school students and their children are predominantly families of color: 75% self-identify as Hispanic, 18% as Black, 6% as White, and 1% as other. Approximately one third of the students served have previously dropped out and are re-engaging in their education at New Legacy. Another one third of the students were homeless at one point in the school year. In the first three years of New Legacy's existence, a high percentage (75-90%) of students attending the school were pregnant or parenting. Each year this percentage has declined as teen parent rates are dropping in the state. As a result, more non-parents were enrolled, many of which were seeking alternative education programs and opportunities. This shift in demographic was quick, and presented new programming needs and challenges throughout the year as we adjusted to serving a new population of students. New Legacy's first School Performance Framework (SPF), from the 2015-16 school year, resulted in an overall rating of Priority Improvement. In the following years, our SPF increased to an Improvement rating. Following two years of ''paused'' ratings during COVID, NLCS maintained an Improvement rating through the 2022-2023 school year. In the 2023-2024 school year, NLCS dropped to Priority Improvement but anticipate seeing growth in the 2024-2025 SPF data.
