About Gunnison High School (3694)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Gunnison High School

2025-2026

Gunnison High School (GHS) is a small, rural high school serving approximately 400 students within the Gunnison Watershed School District (RE-1J). As the district does not belong to a Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES), GHS and its partner schools have developed innovative approaches to provide comprehensive services and opportunities for students from all backgrounds. Over the past two decades, GHS has experienced steady growth in the number of students qualifying for Free and Re… duced Lunch (FRL) and Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) services. While the increase in FRL eligibility partially reflects more accurate reporting through direct certification, it also highlights important demographic and socioeconomic shifts within our community. When analyzing data to guide instructional practices, GHS consistently meets or exceeds state averages in postsecondary readiness indicators. However, the school continues to face challenges in the Colorado Department of Education?s performance framework categories of academic growth and closing growth gaps among student subgroups. The GHS strategic planning team continues to explore the root causes of these gaps and to identify targeted strategies for improvement. Recognizing the importance of both academic growth and equitable outcomes, Gunnison High School remains committed to enhancing performance on state assessments while honoring the strengths that define our school and community?our high graduation rates and strong postsecondary readiness. With the implementation of Colorado?s graduation guidelines and community support through a successful bond initiative, GHS has expanded its focus on programs designed to meet the needs of students who may not be college-bound but seek meaningful, workforce-ready skills to ensure success after high school. In examining root causes, the strategic planning team identified that many students who are not college-bound often struggle to find relevance and connection within traditional school structures. In response, GHS has prioritized the development of career and technical education (CTE) programs that increase engagement through real-world learning. The Board of Education, superintendent, and bond oversight committee have been instrumental in supporting this vision. Through the district?s Pathways program, students can enroll in online and technical courses?such as Medical Assistant, Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), and Cosmetology?offered through the Technical School of the Rockies, with the long-term goal of expanding opportunities to include industry-recognized certifications. GHS will continue to strengthen its CTE offerings and broaden concurrent enrollment partnerships with Western Colorado University to ensure all students?whether pursuing college, technical training, or direct workforce entry?graduate with the skills, confidence, and direction to thrive beyond high school.
