About Monterey Community School (0501)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Monterey Community School

2025-2026

Monterey Community school has a rich history of 65 years of service to generations of students, families and members of our community. We pride ourselves on being a community who embraces success and challenges together through learning, reflection and celebration. Our mission is to empower every child as learner and leaders through a collective effort of ownership with the belief that every child has genius to become a leader and productive member of our society. Monterey re-opened its doors to… 286 students in 2021 after closing due to the COVID pandemic to reunite our students, staff and families as a K-8 school of choice located within the urban setting of Mapleton Public Schools. Today, we serve 437 students with 87% of students identified as minority students. 74% of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch; 42% are identified as English Language Learners and 15% are identified as qualifying for an IEP. Monterey has engaged in partnership with Leader in Me since June of 2022. Leader in Me supports schools with a focus in three areas of a school: Leadership, Academics and Culture.  It is built on core values to build shared leadership, a positive culture that fosters a sense of belonging, and empowerment of students and adults to live the 7 Habits of highly effective people.  A Leader in Me Coach supports the school 3 times a year. Our performance status this past year has declined. In 2022, Monterey was not an accredited school due to insufficient data and low participation on the School Performance Framework. In 2023, Monterey was an accredited school with an Improvement Plan (49.8% of points earned). However, in 2024, Monterey remained an accredited school with an Improvement Plan and an overall decline in total points earned (45.5% of points earned). Unfortunately, this trend has continued as an accredited school with a Priority Improvement Plan Year 1 and overall decline in total points earned (40.5% of points earned). To develop the UIP, parents, School Accountability Committee, school leadership, and district level administrators worked collaboratively. A written notice of the initial plan type was shared with families on September 26th, 2025, with a School Accountability Committee met on October 3, 2025. Drafts of the plan were revised over the course of various staff and community meetings. Additionally, district administration provided a series of work sessions for support as needed
