About Canon City Middle School (1262)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Canon City Middle School

2024-2025

CCMS is a traditional middle school with 378 students in grades 6th, 7th, and 8th. We offer instruction in all core subjects and life skills and academic intervention classes. The staff of Cañon City Middle School work daily to ensure students feel connected to the building and at least one individual staff member through an advisory class. Students take seven or eight classes per day, four or five of them core: English, Math, Science, and Social Studies and either Spanish or Drafting (new this … year).  They then get the chance to choose electives between, Band, Choir, Physical Education, Weightlifting, Wood Shop, beginner and advanced Technology, and Art. Students can also take Academic Enrichment (AE) classes that focus on both Math and English intervention as well as special choice classes such as WWI history, Games, CrossStich, Basic Agriculture, Origami, Criminology, Archaeology, and Dance among others. The availability of Spanish and Drafting this year are the most notable differences from the past happenings at Canon City Middle School.  These classes were added after a collaborative effort with our staff to decide how we would best utilize additional staff members.   Spanish class is in its second year here at CCMS and we have 12 students in the 8th grade who successfully passed the Spanish 1 exam for CCHS.  Drafting has expanded students' ability to create spatial and relational connections.  Cañon City Middle School has a staff-designed, developed, and implemented culture program with a focus on the whole child and positive behavior outcomes. S.O.A.R stands for Success, Ownership, Attitude, and Respect, the four basics we believe all our students must have to be successful.  Students are encouraged and rewarded for displaying positive behavior while they help other students grow. Athletics have been successful this year. The student-athletes of CCMS won the Titles in Boys and Girls Basketball, we were the runner up in Volleyball and Cross country with a strong football season. Participation rates in sports and extracurricular activities were hovering around 75+ this school year, a great sign of engagement for CCMS students. We thank all our parents for sharing their students with us. It is a pleasure to take care of them and teach them each day. We strive to prepare youngsters for the next level of education as well as the rest of their life.
