Berthoud Elementary is located in a small community surrounded by farmland, along the Colorado Front Range. The agricultural roots of the community are rapidly changing. As a result of the expansive residential growth taking place, the director of community planning has referred to Berthoud as one of the fastest-growing municipalities in one of the fastest-growing areas of the country. This growth has led families who are seeking affordable housing to the area, resulting in gradual shifts in stu…
dent demographics. Currently, 466 students are enrolled at Berthoud Elementary. Our school employs 58 staff members. We offer an Early Childhood program onsite at our school, with approximately 30 students enrolled in the morning and afternoon programs, who are supported by five staff members. Historically, at the start of the 2019-2020 school year, our school was experiencing rapid growth as a result of new families moving into the area. Our enrollment at that time was 486 students. As a result of the pandemic, our enrollment dropped to a low of 385 students at the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year, and we ended the year at 419. While our enrollment is gradually approaching prior levels, we are also starting to experience significant numbers of withdrawals, which has stagnated our overall growth. Many of these families report they are relocating outside of Colorado. Our generational demographic has also shifted, as a result of the integration of new students. Previously, many of our students have had parents, and even grandparents, attend and stay involved at our school. This shift has impacted family engagement. Attendance has remained consistent in the last 5 years. Our attendance rate in 2023-2024 was 94.2%, the same rate as 5 years earlier in 2019-2020. During the 2017-2018 school year, programming for Multilingual Learners was established at our school. Our Learning Center serves the needs of 54 students, with 40 of these students receiving moderate needs support. We also provide support for 14 students with a variety of physical, cognitive and behavioral in our Intensive Learning Center. Berthoud Elementary has historically demonstrated high performance, earning the John Irwin Award in 2002, 2004, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2023. The Governors Distinguished Improvement Award was earned in 2012, 2013 and 2014, as well. Historically, we have had high parent and community involvement. Collaboration with Reading Corps and Kids Hope provide reading support and mentoring opportunities for students, and a local foundation has equipped classrooms with technology and other resources to support the learning environment. Specials teachers have been trained to provide specific interventions, and we have maintained a half-time interventionist. We have actively recruited engaged parent leaders on our School Accountability Committee, and benefit from a supportive Parent Teacher Association.
