Speech or Language Impairment (SLI)

Speech or Language Impairment (SLI) Description:

In order for a student to be eligible for a Speech or Language Impairment, under the classification headings of articulation, fluency, voice, functional communication or delayed language development, must be evidence of dysfunction in one or more of the following criteria:

  • Receptive and expressive language (oral and written) difficulties including syntax (word order, word form, developmental level)
  • Semantics (vocabulary, concepts and word finding)
  • Pragmatics (purposes and uses of language)
  • Auditory processing, including sensation (acuity), perception (discrimination, sequencing, analysis and synthesis) association, auditory attention
  • Deficiency of structure and function of oral peripheral mechanism
  • Articulation including substitutions, omissions, distortions or additions of sound
  • Voice, including deviation of respiration, phonation (pitch, intensity, quality), resonance
  • Fluency, including hesitant speech, stuttering, cluttering and related disorders
  • Problems in auditory perception such as discrimination and memory.

SLI is most often addressed in schools by Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) and Speech-Language Pathology Assistants (SLPAs).

    Associations & Committees

    ASHA State Education Advocacy Leader (SEAL)

    State Education Advocacy Leaders (SEALs) are appointed to advocate on education issues by CSHA our ASHA recognized state speech-language hearing association. The SEAL’s purpose is “to enhance and perpetuate the advocacy, leadership, and clinical management skills of school-based ASHA members at the state and local levels to influence administrative and public policy decisions that affect the delivery of speech-language pathology and audiology services in school settings.” Find more information about SEALs and who represents Colorado.

    The Colorado Speech-Language Hearing Association (CSHA)

    CSHA is a professional association consisting of speech-language pathologists and audiologists that work in a variety of settings throughout Colorado. The key goals of CSHA are the advancement of education, advocacy, and member communication amongst SLPs and Audiologists. Membership in CSHA supports state level advocacy for our professions, CE events hosted in Colorado, communication to members on important issues, as well as volunteer and networking opportunities. CSHA's vision is "Making Colorado a place where all voices are heard." CSHA welcomes future professionals and speech-language pathology assistants. We hope you'll consider becoming a member.     Speech-Language Advisory Committee (SLAC)

    SLAC Mission Statement: The Committee believes that speech-language pathologists and special educators in Colorado deserve innovative professional development opportunities that address issues, challenges, and evidence-base practices relevant to infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents with disabilities. The Committee provides advice on policies and procedures for best practices and in the alignment and standardization of services across the state. Committee members consist of regional representatives, hospital representatives, school administrators, university liaisons and various other stakeholder groups. Regional Representatives act as liaisons for their regional public school SLP constituents. They are nominated by their Special Education Director and chosen through an application process to serve in this capacity. Representatives from the Colorado Speech-Language-Hearing Association (CSHA), the university programs, and community liaisons were added to the Committee to ensure collaboration between significant stakeholders across the state.

    Career Tracks

    School-based SLPs are Master’s degree educated experts in the areas of speech, language and communication. SLPAs have Bachelor’s degrees and have completed a certification program and clinical practicum hours. 

    There are a variety of pathways to becoming a school-based SLP in Colorado. Interested parties with a BA or BS in any field can complete an SLP Prerequisites (SLPP) program to get prepared for an SLP graduate program, or complete an SLPA certification program. If you have a Bachelor’s degree in communication disorders or a related field, you may be eligible to enroll directly into a Master’s degree program.     Face-To-Face Trainings

    Speech Sound Disorders: Choosing and Using the Right Treatment Approaches

    This SLP Workshop Series is presented by Dr. Kelly Farquharson, Ph.D.

    This comprehensive workshop will introduce educators to evidence-based interventions for school-based SLPs working with children who have speech sound disorders. It will cover three evidence-based treatment approaches for working with students with disabilities - specifically speech sound disorders - with a focus on high fidelity of implementation, target selection, and word selection. The workshop will be interactive and will include coaching and modeling procedures.

    Workshop Components: 

    1. Half-Day in-person workshop on Thursday, March 14th with two session options:
      • AM - 8:30 am to 12:00 pm
      • PM - 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm
    2. Required: Watch a pre-workshop recording on Dyslexia and speech sound disorders between March 4 - March 14, 2024.
    3. Optional: Post-Workshop Virtual Coaching Sessions held via Zoom (from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm) on the following Tuesdays: 
      • April 9th - Topic: Dyslexia/Reading
      • April 16th - Topic: SSD Treatment
      • April 23rd - Topic: Open Question and Answer,

    Registration will be available from Tuesday, January 9th through Monday, February 12th at 5:00 pm.

    Additional Workshop Details

    • In-Person workspace will be held in Thornton, CO.
    • No cost for this training.
    • Space is limited, register early. 
    • Earn 5.5 CEU professional development hours
    • Virtual Coaching sessions are optional, but additional credit hours can be earned and adjusted. 
    • Registration does not guarantee enrollment in the training. The training facilitator will review all registrants. Workshop enrollment will verified via email prior to the training date. 

    About the Trainer

    Dr. Kelly Farquharson is an associate professor in the School of Communication Science and Disorders at Florida State University. She directs the Children's Literacy and Speech Sound Lab (CLaSS), which has a mission to help children with speech and language impairments achieve classroom success. Her work is published in many peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Farquharson is an affiliate member at the Florida Center for Reading Research and is also an ASHA Fellow.

    Strategies to Write Informational Text

    Strategies to Write Informational Text for Secondary Students is an 8-week self-paced course with 11 modules that provide resources to support the writing process. It follows the book by Jill Jackson, How to Teach Students to Write Informational Text. 15 CDE Contact Hours available.

    SLPA Supervision in Colorado Schools

    This course is designed for any speech-language pathologist who is new to supervising/mentoring an SLPA in Colorado or who needs a review. It includes collaborative models of supervision, roles and responsibilities of supervisors and the roles and responsibilities of SLPAs according to Colorado standards. The course meets the ASHA's two hour supervision requirement and ten CDE contact hours are available.

    Social Communication and Engagement Triad (Online Course)

    The SCET Triad is a 6-week, self-paced online course with 6 modules to learn about the interconnectedness between communication and engagement. This course is intended for educators who support students with an autism spectrum disorder or other complex communication disorders. 7.5 CDE Contact Hours available.

    Auditory and Language Processing Disorders (Online Course)

    The Auditory and Language Processing Disorders is a 10-week, self-paced online course with 5 modules. Participants will earn 7 professional development hours for completion of the course. This mini course is about the special educator’s role with understanding auditory and language processing disorders through assessment and intervention.

    Journal Club Online Courses

    The Journal Club is an online course that uses articles about language and literacy to create the opportunity to read professional articles related to school-based issues, participate in online discussions to support the implementation of strategies, and complete a knowledge check assessment. 

     Multidimensional View of Reading Comprehension (Journal Club - Online Course)

    These articles address the multidimensional aspect of reading, including the role of the SLP in assessment and intervention of reading comprehension. 7 CDE contact hours.

    Analyzing Language Samples in Adolescents to Support Student Growth  (Journal Club - Online Course)

    This journal club looks at articles on how early speech or language disorders may affect language and literacy outcomes during adolescence. It explores how spoken and written language samples can be useful in assessment and intervention. 4 CDE contact hours.

    The Impact of Speech-Language on Literacy  (Journal Club - Online Course)

    This journal club focuses on increasing your understanding of the impact language development has on reading and writing skills as literacy develops over time. 5 CDE contact hours.

    What SLPs Need to Know About Dyslexia  (Journal Club - Online Course)

    This journal club focuses on the role speech-language pathologists play in assessing and providing interventions for students identified with or suspected of having dyslexia. 8.5 CDE contact hours.
