About This This Training Series

This speech/language professional development series focuses on implementing dynamic assessment, recognizing cultural and linguistic bias in assessment practices, and building confidence in using dynamic assessment for eligibility determination, ongoing progress monitoring, and instruction. The series emphasizes the importance of collaboration, group problem-solving, and incorporating caregiver/family input throughout the process. This series consists of three webinars.

Session 1: Enhancing Accuracy and Reducing Bias in Speech-Language Evaluation

Session Description:

Enhancing Accuracy and Reducing Bias in Speech-Language Evaluations: The Role of Comprehensive and Dynamic Assessment from Research to Practice (Session 1) explores current research on strategies to enhance the accuracy of speech-language assessments while minimizing potential bias. Participants will learn about essential tools and methods, including parent/caregiver interviews and nonword repetition tasks, and how to implement them effectively. The session also highlights the role of dynamic assessment in equitable evaluation practices.

Session 2: Building Skills in Language Sample Analysis with Monolingual and Multilingual Students

Session 2 Description

This session focus' on helping SLPs develop skills to collect and analyze language samples from monolingual and bilingual/multilingual students. Participants will learn how to use the School-age Language Assessment Measures (SLAM) for elicitation and analysis, and how to integrate dynamic assessment through graduated prompting to better understand students’ language abilities.

About The Presenter

Presenter Bio: Dr. Cate Crowley, J.D., Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is Professor of Practice in Teachers College, Columbia University’s CSD program, where she founded the bilingual/multicultural focus and the Bilingual SLP Extension Institute. As an experienced attorney and certified speech-language pathologist, her website, leadersproject.org, offers free resources to improve the quality of disability evaluations, including online courses, test reviews, model evaluations, and evidence-based language elicitation materials – the School-age Language Assessment Measures and the Pre-SLAM (Preschool Language Assessment Measures). These evaluation materials are available in many languages, including Spanish, Russian, Mandarin, dialects of Arabic, Bengali, and others. The website regularly receives over 80,000 visits each month from over 120 countries. An ASHA Fellow and ASHA Honors recipient, Dr. Crowley has received ASHA's Multicultural Award, Outstanding International Contributions Award, and the Van Hattum Award for outstanding contributions to the schools. Dr. Crowley is fluent in English, Spanish, and French. Dr. Crowley’s work is grounded in a deep commitment to appropriate assessment and identification practices. Her efforts focus on improving the quality of services provided to children from minoritized and multilingual communities, including those from lower socio-economic backgrounds. While on ASHA’s Multicultural Issues Board, Dr. Crowley co-authored the current ASHA practice policy documents on the roles and responsibilities of SLPs in schools.
