Online Key Facts

• Enrollment: Student enrollment for online schools and programs increased in the 2023-24 school year to 31,839 students. Online students represent 3.48% of all K-12 public school students in Colorado.

• Graduation: The 4-year graduation rate for online schools in 2023 was 55.7%.

• Dropout: The dropout rate for online schools reached an all-time low in 2023 at 6.8% and has been trending downward for the past decade.

• Charter: Of the 47 Multi-District Online schools, 13 operate as charter schools. 42.8% of all online students in the 2023-24 school year attended an online charter school.

• Grade Level: In the 2023-24 school year, 69% of all online students were enrolled in high school grade levels.

• Demographics: Minority students comprised 51.7% of all online students in the 2023-24 school year.

• FRL Status: In the 2023-24 school year, online schools served 16,523 students who were eligible for free and reduced meals. This equates to 54% of students enrolled in online schools.

Online School Performance Ratings 2023

Multi-district and single-district online schools are held to the same reporting and accountability standards as any public school in the state and are assigned a school plan type rating based on the same applicable rating formula. Single-district online programs are not considered schools and accountability for the students is held at the brick-and-mortar school within the school district that serves as the official enrollment school for the student.
