Stephen Varela sworn in as newest State Board of Education member

PUEBLO -- Stephen Varela was sworn in today in Pueblo as the newest Colorado State Board of Education member who will represent Congressional District 3.

Varela, from Pueblo, was appointed by the Republican Party Congressional District 3 Vacancy Committee to fill a vacancy on the board left by outgoing board member Joyce Rankin.

Varela, a military veteran, was previously board president of the Chavez Huerta Preparatory Academy, a charter school in Pueblo. Varela and his wife Kayla have four children ages 7 to 15 attending schools in Pueblo.

Varela will serve through November 2024 when the seat will be up for election to fulfill the remainder of the term – which ends in January 2027.

Congressional District 3 covers about 50,000 square miles running from the Wyoming to New Mexico border in western Colorado and parts of southern Colorado. The district covers 27 counties with large voter populations in Mesa and Pueblo counties and small populations in Hinsdale, Mineral and San Juan counties.
