Homeless Education

About Homeless Education

Definition of Homeless Youth

Any displaced child or youth who is living in a shelter, motel, inadequate trailer or house, is staying temporarily with relatives or friends due to economic hardship or loss of housing, or is living in any other homeless situation has educational rights under the McKinney-Vento Act.

Denver Post Feature

Dana Scott, CDE's State Homeless Education Coodinator, worked with Jennifer Brown, a reporter from the Denver Post, for several months on an article illustrating the impacts of homelessness on students’ lives, including their education. The article’s intent was also to provide information on the McKinney-Vento Act and the educational rights of homeless students. There are three parts and a 22 minute video.

November is Homeless Youth Awareness Month

November is Colorado Homeless and Runaway Youth Awareness month.  Recognized locally and nationally, November marks an opportunity in our calendar to increase awareness and educate the public on strategies for preventing and ending youth homelessness.

The Office of Homeless Youth Services, through the Department of Local Affairs, provides statewide leadership for the annual campaign and participates in national planning efforts through the National Runaway Switchboard.  Please visit their website for more information on how to get involved across the state.

McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Observation Trainings

These trainings are held throughout the year at various McKinney-Vento subgrantee districts, and are open to any regional homeless education liaisons and school personnel who want to know more about McKinney-Vento best practices.
