Tara Brown
Known as 'The Connection Coach,' Tara believes strongly that kids are committed to people – not programs – and that a key to reaching youth is through the power of positive connections. As an award-winning educator, author and speaker, Tara understands connecting with diverse populations, building relationships and getting the most out of any youth organization. She is recognized as a leading expert in helping adults better understand how to build powerful connections with today's youth. Tara's 25+ year journey as a teacher and coach has taken her from rural Florida, to gang territory in North Long Beach, CA, and to one of the largest high schools in Tennessee with students representing over 36 countries.
Dr. Joseph Johnson Jr.
Dr. Joseph Johnson is the founding executive director of the National Center for Urban School Transformation (NCUST) at San Diego State University Research Foundation (SDSURF). While serving at NCUST, he was also a professor of Educational Leadership at San Diego State University (SDSU), then dean of the College of Education, and finally the university's interim provost and senior vice president. In July 2019, he retired from university administration to focus exclusively on NCUST. Earlier in his career, he served as a teacher in Southeast San Diego, a school and district administrator in New Mexico, a state department official in both Texas and Ohio, a researcher at the University of Texas, and a Senior Executive Service Director at the US Department of Education where he led the nation's largest federal elementary and secondary education programs. He earned a Ph.D. in educational administration from the University of Texas, a master's degree at San Diego State University, and a Bachelor of Science Degree (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh. He has received outstanding educator awards in both New Mexico and Texas and published multiple articles, book chapters, and reports. One of his most popular books is “Teaching Practices from America's Best Urban Schools: A Guide for School and Classroom Leaders”.
Susana Córdova
In June 2023, Susana Córdova was named Colorado's 18th education commissioner and the first Latina to hold the state's top education position. Prior to being named commissioner, Córdova spent more than 33 years in education. She served as an assistant principal, principal, director, chief academic officer, chief schools officer, and deputy superintendent before becoming the superintendent of Denver Public Schools. She also served as deputy superintendent in Dallas ISD, the second-largest district in Texas. Dr. Córdova has a master's degree in curriculum and instruction/education administration from the University of Colorado Denver, and a doctorate in educational leadership from Southern Methodist University.

Lindsey Jaeckel
Lindsey Jaeckel joined CDE in 2012 and has served in a number of roles at CDE. Lindsey served as the Executive Director of School & District Transformation, and transitioned to her new role as the Assistant Commissioner of School Quality and Support. The School Quality and Support Division includes Accountability and Continuous Improvement, School and District Transformation, Schools of Choice, Federal Programs and Supports, and Field Services.
Lindsey began her work in education as an elementary school teacher and served as a data and professional learning coach across a network of schools. Lindsey holds a B.A. in History from Northwestern University and an M.S. in Education and Public Policy from New York University. In his spare time, Lindsey likes to spend time with her husband and two elementary school aged children enjoying all that Colorado has to offer!
Janet Damon
Janet Damon is a proud Denver Public Schools graduate and has spent her career with the districts in a variety of roles, including as a history teacher, literacy interventionist, library specialist and trainer, and a K-12 school librarian. She currently serves as a history teacher at DELTA High School and has been an educator for more than 25 years.
In addition to her work in the classroom, Damon co-founded Afros and Books, a book club focused on literacy and empowerment that promotes equal access to books in underserved communities. She also organizes outdoor activities for families, such as hiking, kayaking, archery, yoga, fly fishing, and birding, while providing more than 1,000 new books to youth for summer reading.
Damon received the 2024 Extraordinary Teacher Award from Suntec Concrete, the 2023 African Americans Who are Making a Difference Award, the 2022 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award, the 2022 Inaugural Making Our Futures Brighter Award, and the 2020 Library Journal Mover and Shaker Award. She has also earned fellowships from Facing History and Fund for Teachers.
She holds a bachelor's degree from Metropolitan State University, a master's degree in library and information science from the University of Denver, and an educational specialist degree in library and information science from the University of Denver, and an educational specialist degree in leadership for educational organizations from the University of Colorado at Denver.
