This program, established in 2012, is dedicated to ensuring that students in foster care are achieving academically through course completion, advancing to the next grade, accruing credits toward graduation, and on a path to post secondary success. These efforts are being organized by the State Coordinator for Foster Care Education, who is leading this work. It was launched in partnership with the Colorado Department of Human Services, Morgridge Family Foundation, and Mile High United Way.

May is Foster Care Awareness Month!
In honor of foster care awareness month, the Foster Care Education Program at CDE is hosting a suitcase drive for children and youth experiencing foster care. Children and youth often do not have access to suitcases in the event of an out-of-home placement. This drive is meant to ease difficult transitions by providing a new suitcase. Suitcases will be donated to the Tennyson Center, and given directly to a child in foster care!
An Amazon Wish List was created to fulfill the requests of the Tennyson Center. Orders will be shipped directly to CDE and then delivered to the Tennyson Center. Direct donations can be delivered to the CDE lobby at 201 E. Colfax Ave. Denver, CO. 80203 from May 15, 2017-June 9, 2017.

- Foster Care Continuum (FCC) Coffee Talk
This is an opportunity for CWEL’s to learn what is new around foster care education and to talk with each other about current successes and barriers in a collaborative way. Each month a different location around the metro area has been chosen. Come to one or come to all. Breakfast or lunch will be on your own but this will provide us a venue to get together face to face for 2 hours each month. See dates and locations below. RSVP at the event bright hyperlink below, so we can assure we have enough space for everyone who plans to attend.
More to come soon!
- Foster Care Webinar "Back to School"
What is my role as the LEA’s Child Welfare Education Liaison (CWEL)? This webinar will provide an overview of Foster Care and Education in Colorado. It will review both federal and local legislation that was created to protect the educational rights of students in foster care. This is an expanded 101 on the roles and responsibility of the CWEL. Ideal for any new CWEL, but a great refresher for current CWEL’s as well.
