All eligible districts opt in to Healthy School Meals for All

DENVER -- More than 800,000 students in public schools will have access to free breakfast and lunch under the new Healthy School Meals for All initiative that was adopted by all eligible school districts in Colorado.

Thanks to voters in November 2022, Colorado students in school districts that implement the federal National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs will be served free breakfast and lunch under the new program that began this fall.

These aren’t the boring school meals of yesteryear. Today, schools increasingly use fresh, natural ingredients and provide kitchen staff the training to make healthy meals. Experts say that providing fresh, accessible school meal options to every student throughout the day fuels their success and grows healthy habits that drive lifelong learning and achievement.

Students will benefit from the Healthy School Meals for All program, which is paid for from a tax on Colorado’s highest earners and made Colorado one of only nine states in the country to offer free meals to students. Districts had until Sept. 15 to say whether they would participate in the program. Every school district already implementing the federal programs agreed to participate.

A fiscal analysis estimated the program will cost approximately $100 million annually to fund. The tax measure is expected to raise more than $100 million every year by reducing income tax deductions for households earning $300,000 or more. Additionally, districts participating in the program must maximize the federal funding they get from a program called the Community Eligibility Provision, which allows the highest poverty schools and districts to serve meals at no cost to students without collecting household applications.

Todos los distritos elegibles adoptan Comidas Escolares Saludables para Todos(as)

DENVER -- Más de 800,000 estudiantes en escuelas públicas tendrán acceso a desayuno y almuerzo gratis bajo la nueva iniciativa Comidas Escolares Saludables para Todos(as) que fue adoptada por todos los distritos escolares elegibles en Colorado.

Gracias a los votantes de noviembre de 2022, los estudiantes de Colorado en los distritos escolares que implementan los Programas Nacionales de Almuerzo Escolar y Desayuno Escolar recibirán desayuno y almuerzo gratis bajo el nuevo programa que comenzó este otoño.

Estas no son las aburridas comidas escolares de antaño. Hoy en día, las escuelas utilizan cada vez más ingredientes frescos y naturales. También se les brinda al personal de cocina la capacitación necesaria para preparar comidas saludables. Los expertos dicen que brindar opciones de comidas escolares frescas y accesibles a los estudiantes durante el día impulsa su éxito y fomenta hábitos saludables que guían el aprendizaje y los logros a través de su vida.

Los estudiantes se beneficiarán del programa Comidas Escolares Saludables para Todos(as), que se costea con impuestos a las personas con mayores ingresos de Colorado y convirtió a Colorado en uno de los nueve estados que ofrece comidas gratuitas a los estudiantes. Los distritos tenían hasta el 15 de septiembre para optar al programa. Todos los distritos escolares que hayan implementado los programas federales aceptaron participar.
