Despite decades of transition efforts fostering career opportunities for students with disabilities, there continues to be barriers to obtaining integrated employment as adults. This webinar will provide tools for professionals working with students with disabilities to improve access for them to integrated employment in high school to bolster attainment of competitive employment after high school.
After attending this webinar participants will:
- Identify the Evidence‐Based Practices outlined in the National Technical Assistance Center for Transition (NTACT) that emphasize career development and integrated employment
- Understand why integrated employment prepares students with disabilities for sustainable adult employment at a far greater rate than volunteer positions
- Evaluate their current transition and career development programs for students with disabilities by analyzing the types of employment students receive
- Choose from multiple presented tools as to which ones would best jumpstart integrated employment efforts in their current program
About the Presenter
Dr. Clavenna‐Deane has worked in the field of secondary special education and transition for 28 years. She started off as a high school special education teacher emphasizing career awareness in the classes she taught. She “transitioned” to a Transition Specialist in her local district for almost 10 years and was able to work directly with students with disabilities as they planned their career experiences in high school and their post‐school goals for after high school. After receiving her doctorate in special education with an emphasis in transition services, Beth worked with multiple districts as an instructional coach, behavior specialist, and transition specialist. Her current position is as a Kansas MTSS State Trainer. She has trained over 20 districts in the MTSS process with a focus on secondary programs and behavior and social emotional learning. Career development, transition, and planning for life after high school are always woven into the work she does with MTSS districts. Transition planning for students with disabilities has always been a deep passion for Beth, and it is always common to see her pursuing an innovative, transition‐related project in her spare time.
