About the Webinar

Presented by: Megan Miller, PhD, BCBA-D, LBA

Originally Aired: September 8, 2021

Series Air Dates:

  • September 8th, 2021 - Part 1: The Assessment Process
  • September 15th, 2021 - Part 2: Application of the Assessment Process
  • September 22nd, 2021 - Part 3: Best Practices in Assessment for Early learners

A variety of assessment options exist for identifying skills to target for learners diagnosed with Autism and other developmental disabilities. Many practitioners are trained on a specific assessment with little regard to the appropriateness of that assessment for the learner. This presentation discusses how to individualize the assessment process to create the most effective intervention program for each learner. Additionally, video examples are provided that demonstrate how to observe a learner and assess skills without using a commercially available assessment.

Part 1:

The Assessment Process: In this session, we will discuss a general framework for conducting assessments regardless of the materials being used. This session introduces the concept of “core assessments” and how to apply this with different learner profiles. The content of this session is applicable to any setting or assessment materials.

Part 2:

Application of the Assessment Process: In this session, we will apply the content from session 1. Video examples will be used to explore how to complete the general assessment process with different learner profiles.

Part 3:

Best Practices in Assessment for Early learners: This session focuses on some of the key aspects of developmental research that we should be familiar with when conducting assessments in Early Intervention settings. This session will also include resources relating to assessment and intervention for early learners ages 3-5.

Series Learning Objectives:

  • Describe at least 3 different commercially available assessments for learners with autism (Part 1)
  • Identify at least 1 commercially available assessment for young learners with autism (Part 1)
  • Define the term “core” assessment and explain how this can be used to develop intervention (Part 1)
  • Identify at least 1 assessment that can be used to address barriers to learning (Part 1)
  • Describe the 4 different learner profiles and identify typical assessments/programs used for such profiles (Part 1 and 2)
  • Conduct assessments with learners without using a commercially available assessment (Part 2)
  • Provide a basic explanation of the Early Start Denver Model (Part 3)
  • Explain the importance of focus on social interaction and development with the birth to three population (Part 3)
