The New America School (NAS) provides a public charter school model for schooling that is intended to empower new immigrants, English language learners, and academically underserved students with the educational tools and support they need to maximize their potential, succeed, and live the American dream. Each campus within NAS is classified as alternative education charter school within the state of Colorado. CRS § 22-7-604.5 states that any school in the state serving at least 90% high risk st…
udents (as defined by 15 different indicators) is designated to be an alternative education campus, or AEC. Each year, approximately 95% of students attending NAS Aurora campus have at least one high risk indicator. NAS is located in diverse communities in two states and attracts new immigrants, English language learners, and academically underserved or disconnected youth, ages 14-21. NAS Aurora is located in a diverse community in Adams County where there are high rates of poverty, low rates of high school attendance and completion, and many families who are newly arrived to the United States and do not speak English. NAS Aurora focuses on re-engaging students in school, establishing effective relationships with at-risk students, assisting students to acquire fluency in English and skills related to reading, language arts, mathematics, and science, and improving their opportunities for access to jobs and post-secondary education.
