About Atlas Preparatory High School (0469)

A MESSAGE FROM:

Atlas Preparatory High School

2023-2024

The mission of Atlas is to prepare and empower all students for success on their post-graduate paths through educational excellence, character development, and community engagement. Founded in 2009, Atlas is a public, urban charter school that currently serves 950 low income students. It is a highly diverse demographic comprised of 74% Hispanic, 14% African-American, 11% Caucasian and 1% Other. 91% of students are on free or reduced lunch and many come from an impoverished family. Atlas was orig… inally created to prepare academically underperforming low-income students for college and successful careers. It is located in Harrison School District Two, a historically underserved and economically depressed area of the city populated with small strip malls, urban blight and a startling lack of physical community assets or quality school choice. Atlas? long-term investment in combating poverty and providing a sustainable, stable learning environment to all students goes beyond just allowing students to succeed. Atlas has fostered the belief that no matter what path students take to or beyond the school, they take the most important thing with them: the ability to be successful and become their highest potential. The founders of Atlas targeted Harrison School District 2 because of the consistently low academic outcomes for low-income and at-risk students in the district, the high drop-out rate, and the low college enrollment and finishing rates. The negative trajectory in academic achievement many students in the district take as they progress from 3rd to 10th grade is striking. Within HSD2 more than 60 percent of all 8th grade students did not reach met or exceeding on state standardized assessments in mathematics, reading, and science.
