About James Madison Charter Academy School (5033)

A MESSAGE FROM:

James Madison Charter Academy School

2023-2024

James Madison Charter Academy (JMCA) is a small K to 8 project-based charter school in the Security-Widefield area of Colorado Springs. The school currently has 101 students enrolled in the school for the 2023 to 2024 school year. Demographically, the school historically serves a highly transient military population with a low free and reduced population. However, entering the 2023 to 2024 school year, the school's Free and Reduced lunch population is 45.63%, a significant increase compared to p… revious school years. Demographically, the student population is 45% white, 27% Hispanic, 11% multiracial, 10% African-American, 3% Native American, 3% Native Hawaiian, and 1% Asian or Pacific Islander. To service this student population, the school, under the leadership of Principal Kyle Morin, JMCA's teacher leadership team, and SAAC, has followed a vision of building a strong foundation in grades K to 3 in the fundamentals of math and literacy in order to prepare students for a stronger base in Project-Based Learning in grades 4 to 8. In order to meet this challenge, for the 2022 to 2023 school year, JMCA partnered with the Summit Learning platform for students in grades 4 to 8 and AmeriCorps Reading Corps Youth for Change for students in grades K to 3. While JMCA has many areas to be proud of, the school also has many challenges in its way. To begin, with a small student population, it ultimately has a negative impact on the school's funding which makes it difficult to offer the necessary social-emotional learning supports for students such as a full-time counselor and pay teaching staff a competitive salary which frequently has resulted in staff turnover despite staff satisfaction with the overall school climate. These challenges have created an environment where students have struggled to show appropriate academic growth and achievement. This UIP is designed to combat this recent trend and challenge.
