In the 2021-022 school year, Cherry Creek school district returned to a full year of in-person learning with all k-12 students amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The school year was continually affected by multi-day quarantines for students and staff, surges in COVID variants and debates over masking. Throughout this uncertain time, teachers ability to collaborate effectively with one another was impacted, therefore affecting Professional Learning Communities (PLC), Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTS…
S) and Student Learning Objectives (SLO). In-person learning combined with a continued concern for health, safety and well-being, staff/teachers were asked to isolate themselves and their classrooms, forcing teams to return to instruction provided in silos. This inability to effectively collaborate resulted in a decrease of student Social/Emotional Learning (SEL) and Academic Achievement. There was a large increase in student referrals and concern for the Social/Emotional well-being of students as well as an increase in concern for student academic achievement as teachers were required to focus on SEL components as priority over academics. Maslow's hierarchy of needs states that students must have psychological and safety needs met prior to being able to feel love and belonging; key components of the necessary elements of student learning and academic achievement.
