The Gunnison Watershed School District (GWSD) is located in the Gunnison Valley, a relatively remote area in southwestern Colorado that is a tourist-based destination for people wishing to participate in all forms of outdoor recreation. The Valley is surrounded by mountains and open space which attracts hikers, hunters, mountain bikers and others. The Gunnison Watershed School District (GWSD) is located in the Gunnison Valley, a relatively remote area in southwestern Colorado that is a tourist-based destination for people wishing to participate in all forms of outdoor recreation. The Valley is surrounded by mountains and open space which attracts hikers, hunters, mountain bikers and others. Blue Mesa Reservoir provides year-round access for fishing and water sports while the Crested Butte ski area provides skiing opportunities in the winter and hiking/mountain biking fun in the summer. The school district is geographically the second largest in the State and serves the Gunnison, Crested Butte and Marble communities. For the 2021 school year, it was the 10th most expensive district in which to live. With over 400 employees – FTE and contracted - the District is one of the largest employers in the Valley. Gunnison has three facilities that provides Pre-K – 12 learning. • Lake School - Pre-K and K • Gunnison Community School - Elementary – grades 1-5, Middle – grades 6-8 • Gunnison High School - grades 9-12 Crested Butte has the Crested Butte Community School which provides K-12 learning. • Elementary – grades K-5 • Secondary – grades 6-12 The town of Marble has the Marble Charter School which provides its students a K-8 education. The District has a 21.5% free and reduced population, 7.9% are culturally and linguistically diverse, 11.6% are receiving special education services and 8.5% fall into the Gifted and Talented category.
