Performance Frameworks - Academic Achievement

At the middle school level, the performance framework determines Academic Achievement ratings based on results from the annual CMAS assessments. Mean scale scores are the basic performance metric used to evaluate achievement outcomes. For English Language Arts, mean scale scores are reported for the entire tested population and for the following student subgroups:

The framework assigns a rating to each mean scale score metric based on how it ranks relative to statewide outcomes. Cut points are set at the 15th, 50th, and 85th percentiles. For each rating, a district or school then accumulates a set number of points toward its overall Academic Achievement rating. Points are earned in proportion to the level of the rating, so that higher ratings equate to larger point totals.

The table below shows how ratings and point values are assigned. Note that in accumulating points toward the overall Academic Achievement rating, metrics representing the entire student population are given more weight than metrics representing student subgroups. This is reflected in larger point values associated with the All Students group.

As Colorado fully implements the 2020 Colorado Academic Standards, CMAS science items reflected those standards for the first time in spring 2022. Therefore, scale scores and performance levels were not available in summer 2022. Science assessment results have not been factored into 2022 performance framework ratings.
