Fifth Grade Content Connection Sample: Multiple Perspectives
Multiple perspectives is a concept that centers on viewing an event, situation, object, or idea from various points of view. Fifth grade students explore and critically analyze using multiple perspectives by considering and processing diverse attitudes, experiences, and relationships. Students also research, create products, and develop reasoned arguments that reflect an understanding of multiple perspectives and points of view.

Comprehensive Health and Physical Education
In comprehensive health and physical education, multiple perspectives are exhibited through emotional and social wellness and developing healthy relationships. Exhibiting positive behavior under stressful circumstances requires mastery of the concept of multiple perspectives as well as a complex analysis of internal and external influences on one’s own emotions. Gaining an understanding of multiple perspectives and their influences on emotions, perceptions and behaviors allows students to manage their behaviors and develop understanding, tolerance, and compassion for others.
In dance, multiple perspectives are used to analyze dances in order to identify and examine universal themes in relation to their historical and cultural contexts. Discussing opinions and using rationales based upon conclusions developed from specific dance elements and themes are fundamental critique skills in dance.
Drama and Theatre Arts
In drama and theatre arts, multiple perspectives provide opportunities to reflect on the historical and cultural connections of a performance. Applying various configurations and adjusting transitions according to the context of the script requires an ability to perceive, infer and visualize intent. Decisions such as audience placement, lighting, and historical and cultural context require a synthesis of multiple perspectives.
In music, multiple perspectives involve identifying and analyzing music according to its elements, aesthetic qualities and human responses. For example, within a full musical work, musical selections may contain contrasting perspectives and themes, varying cultural views, and a variety of musical elements to portray a composer’s intent.
Reading, Writing, and Communicating
In reading, writing and communicating, multiple perspectives are used to show how a writer’s purpose can change for different audiences. Learners have greater understanding of the world by exploring opposing viewpoints and developing persuasive arguments.
In science, multiple perspectives involve understanding the culture and context in which science operates. Scientists must keep in mind the cultural impact of their work and recognize that different conclusions could be drawn from the same data.
In social studies, multiple perspectives are used to analyze issues, ideas, and commentary through various lenses of the social studies disciplines and time periods. The ability to understand that perception is influenced by personal experience and various societal attributes will support students as they solve complex problems and become more globally aware of the complexity of decision making throughout their life.
In visual arts, multiple perspectives involve objectively making statements about the intended meaning of a work of art and using artistic media to convey meaning. Discussing multiple perspectives developed from specific characteristics or features found within artworks helps to develop critique skills in visual art. Understanding familiar and unfamiliar cultures through art necessitates an examination of multiple perspectives to discern intended meanings.
In world languages, multiple perspectives occur when learners compare their culture with the target culture(s). Numerous resources, such as texts, video, audio tapes, and guest speakers, are used to learn about other cultures. Knowing about other cultures prepares learners to behave appropriately in these other cultures.
