Connecting to the Colorado Department of Education

Use Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer

You will connect to the Colorado Department of Education through the Internet using either Microsoft or Netscape browser software. Currently supported browser software includes Netscape Navigator version 4.7.x or higher -or- Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.5 with Service Patch 2. Regardless of your browser choice, it must support 128-bit encryption. The level of encryption has been increased in order to enhance security. How to check and upgrade your browser's level of encryption.

During your session, you must use the buttons located at the bottom of each page to navigate through the series of menus and screens. Using the Back or Forward buttons on the browser toolbar could result in old information being displayed. In order to avoid using these buttons during your session, you may find it helpful to remove the toolbar while you are working with the Automated Data Exchange. Toggle the toolbar display on and off by following these steps:

  • Click on the Options menu item of the menu bar located along the top of your browser window.
  • Click on the Show Toolbar item from the drop-down Options menu.

Enter the WWW address for the Automated Data Exchange

Enter the following URL Address in the location window of your browser and press the enter key:

https://cdeapps.cde.state.co.us

The protocol used in this address is https (not the more familiar http).

If you are having problems accessing the web page, you should contact one of the following, depending on the problem.

INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER

  • Dial in configuration (e.g. dial-up networking configuration, installation of proprietary ISP software).
  • Networking setup (e.g. Domain Name Service (DNS), internet protocol (IP) configuration).
  • Connection with ISP problems (e.g. modem configuration problems, busy signals, ISP password problems).
  • Obtaining a copy (downloading) Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  • Installing Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer.
  • Configuring Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer to work with your ISP.
  • Use and configuration of ISP email packages.

SCHOOL DISTRICT SUPPORT

  • General questions (e.g. Windows 95 and application questions, hardware problems).

  • Access denied to web site (https://cdeapps.cde.state.co.us/)
  • Problems with CDE user names and passwords.
  • Problems with file formatting, transfers and edit checks.
  • Problems with reports.

Note the Secure Session

Next, you will probably be shown an information box which reminds you that you are connecting to a secure server and all information passed between you and CDE will be encrypted. See example:

Security Information

You have requested a secure document. The document and any
information you send back are encrypted for privacy while in
transit. For more information on security choose Document
Information from the View Menu.

Depending on how you have set your browser Options for Security Preferences, you may not be shown the above information box. Even if you do not see this box, all data sent between your computer and CDE for the Automated Data Exchange is encrypted. You will be able to tell when you are sending and receiving secure documents by noting the solid blue line towards the top of your browser window and the non-broken key icon in the lower left corner of your browser window.

The Automated Data Exchange Home Page

Once you have connected to the secure server at CDE, the Automated Data Exchange Home Page will be displayed on your browser. This page consists of a link into the Data Exchange Main Menu and several links for CDE contact people. It should appear similar to the following:
