Guide to the Adobe Reader

About Adobe PDF

The World Wide Web - and the CDE website, in particular - offers many files in the Adobe® Portable Document Format (PDF). PDF files are created with the Adobe Acrobat® program. The Adobe Reader -- available at no charge from Adobe Systems --- allows you to view and print any PDF document, or enter data into any PDF form. 

All PDF documents can be printed; documents with graphics, photographs, or scanned pages will take longer to print. Best printing results are obtained with a PostScript laser printer.

About Adobe Reader

The Adobe Reader is needed to view, print, and extract text and graphics from PDF documents, as well as to fill out PDF forms on the CDE website. The current version of the Adobe Reader is 6.01. 

An accessible version of the Adobe Reader which contains support for screen readers is now available. For more information on accessibility and Adobe Reader, visit the access.adobe.com web site.

NOTE:  Adobe Reader 6.01 allows you to save a copy of a PDF file, but not any modifications you might make to it, as in the case of entering data into a form.

If you want to build, save, or manipulate PDF files, you will need to purchase the Adobe Acrobat program. Ordering information is available from Adobe at www.adobe.com.

Using Adobe Reader

IMPORTANT! When running Adobe Reader for the first time, we recommend making the following changes to Adobe Reader's settings:

  1. From the File menu, choose Preferences, then General.
  2. Deselect Open Cross-Document Links (click once in the check box).
  3. Deselect Smooth Text and Monochrome Images (click once in the check box).
