Opportunities will be available for Colorado educators at all levels to participate in the development of Colorado's curriculum samples. This timeline and participation guidelines are tied directly to our Development Plan for the Colorado's District Sample Curriculum Project.
Boom and Bust: A sample instructional unit built from an existing overview. The instructional units built during Phase III will add learning strategies, resource suggestions, differentiation options, and assessment ideas to select curriculum unit overviews. Designed to help all students master the Colorado Academic Standards, these “built-out” units will be available by late winter or early spring of 2014. The draft unit for the 4th grade social studies overview, Boom and Bust, is available now so that educators can preview the content and structure of these forthcoming units. Instructional unit samples will be accompanied with a unique storyboard which illustrates the sequence of learning experiences designed for that unit.
Colorado Educator Participation
Colorado educators are the driving and creative force behind every aspect of Colorado’s District Sample Curriculum Project. In the fall of 2012, 500+ educators created almost 700 sample curriculum unit overviews. In the Spring of 2013, teachers across the state were invited to attend various workshops to learn about the teacher created curriculum samples. Resources, presentations, and a process guide for writing sample curriculum was provided. Fall of 2013, the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) will work with educators to create instructional units based on select samples (unit overviews) created during the first phase of the Project.
During a three-day workshop delivered within a district, a team of educators will produce one full instructional unit. This process reflects a model of educators working together to plan for the instruction of all students. Teams will be comprised of:
- 2 general education teachers (content specialists)
- 1 ELL teacher
- 1 Gifted and Talented teacher
- 1 Special education teacher
- 1 Title One teacher
Upon the completion of Phase III, hundreds of educators will be involved in creating at least one instructional unit. View this evolving map of Colorado reflecting the school districts currently participating in Phase III (updated September 25, 2013).
Again, thank you for your interest in Colorado’s District Sample Curriculum Project; we are excited about the next phase and continuing our work with the great educators of this state.
