6th Grade Standards and Instructional Support

Sixth grade Colorado Academic Standards (CAS) and standards-based resources can now be accessed from one page. Comprehensive Health Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 2. Physical and Personal Wellness

  1. Access valid and reliable information, products, and services to enhance healthy eating behaviors
  2. Access valid and reliable information regarding qualities of healthy family and peer relationships
  3. Comprehend the relationship between feelings and actions
  4. Analyze how positive health behaviors can benefit people throughout their life span

Standard 3. Emotional and Social Wellness

  1. Understand how to be mentally and emotionally healthy

Standard 4. Prevention and Risk Management

  1. Access valid and reliable information, products, and services to enhance healthy eating behaviors

Dance Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 1. Movement, Technique, and Performance

  1. Demonstrate movement originating from a strong center
  2. Perform basic movement phrases containing choreographic intent
  3. Demonstrate skills in foundational dance forms (ballet, modern, tap, jazz)
  4. Perform a basic dance warm-up
  5. Make appropriate nutritional choices for dance performance

Standard 2. Create, Compose and Choreograph

  1. Articulate creative choices required to develop choreographic intent
  2. Demonstrate basic composition skills
  3. Movement phrases are developed based on both existing knowledge and new discoveries

Standard 3. Historical and Cultural Context

  1. Culture and geography are reflected in the traditional dance heritage of a people

Standard 4. Reflect, Connect, and Respond

  1. Critical analysis of dance works requires specific criteria and documentation

Drama and Theatre Arts Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 1. Create

  1. Characterization throughout a scripted or improvised scene
  2. Creation of a scene or play from an original idea, story or other form of literature
  3. Design and technical elements of theatre in improvised and scripted works

Standard 2. Perform

  1. Confidence in characterization skills
  2. Recognition of responsibilities of various technical personnel in performance

Standard 3. Critically Respond

  1. Discuss the influence of cultural and historical themes in theatrical works
  2. Recognize and identify the criteria for a quality performance
  3. Articulate the value of each practitioner’s role in a drama and/or theatrical performance

Mathematics Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 1. Number Sense, Properties, and Operations

  1. Quantities can be expressed and compared using ratios and rates
  2. Formulate, represent, and use algorithms with positive rational numbers with flexibility, accuracy, and efficiency
  3. In the real number system, rational numbers have a unique location on the number line and in space

Standard 2. Patterns, Functions, and Algebraic Structures

  1. Algebraic expressions can be used to generalize properties of arithmetic
  2. Variables are used to represent unknown quantities within equations and inequalities

Standard 3. Data Analysis, Statistics, and Probability

  1. Visual displays and summary statistics of one-variable data condense the information in data sets into usable knowledge

Standard 4. Shape, Dimension, and Geometric Relationships

  1. Objects in space and their parts and attributes can be measured and analyzed

Music Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 1. Expression of Music

  1. Perform music in unison and two parts accurately and expressively at a minimal level of 1 on the difficulty rating scale
  2. Perform music accurately and expressively at a minimal level of .5 on the difficulty rating scale at the first reading
  3. Demonstrate major and minor scales

Standard 2. Creation of Music

  1. Create melodic and rhythmic patterns
  2. Improvise call-and-response patterns

Standard 3. Theory of Music

  1. Identification of rhythmic and melodic patterns in musical examples
  2. Notation of level .5 using the appropriate clef for instrument and/or voice
  3. Analysis of a beginning level composition or performance using musical elements

Standard 4. Aesthetic Valuation of Music

  1. Determination of strengths and weaknesses in musical performances according to specific criteria
  2. Description of music’s role in the human experience, and ways music is used and enjoyed in society

Physical Education Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 1. Movement Competence and Understanding

  1. Demonstrate beginning strategies for a variety of games and sports
  2. Participate in activities that require problem-solving, cooperation, skill assessment, and teambuilding
  3. Use information from a variety of resources to improve performance

Standard 2. Physical and Personal Wellness

  1. Set personal goals for improving health-related fitness
  2. Demonstrate the ability to perform self-paced cardiovascular endurance activities
  3. Identify opportunities in school and in the community for regular participation in physical activity to enhance physical fitness

Standard 3. Emotional and Social Wellness

  1. Recognize diverse skill performance in others and how that diversity affects game, activity, and sport participation
  2. Work cooperatively and productively in a group

Standard 4. Prevention and Risk Management

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of safe practices in a physical activity setting

Reading, Writing, and Communicating Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 1. Oral Expression and Listening

  1. Successful group discussions require planning and participation by all

Standard 2. Reading for All Purposes

  1. Understanding the meaning within different types of literature depends on properly analyzing literary components
  2. Organizing structure to understand and analyze factual information
  3. Word meanings are determined by how they are designed and how they are used in context

Standard 3. Writing and Composition

  1. Writing literary genres for intended audiences and purposes requires ideas, organization, and voice
  2. Writing informational and persuasive genres for intended audiences and purposes require ideas, organization, and voice develop
  3. Specific editing for grammar, usage, mechanics, and clarity gives writing its precision and legitimacy

Standard 4. Research and Reasoning

  1. Individual and group research projects require obtaining information on a topic from a variety of sources and organizing it for presentation
  2. Assumptions can be concealed, and require identification and evaluation
  3. Monitoring the thinking of self and others is a disciplined way to maintain awareness

Science Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 1. Physical Science

  1. All matter is made of atoms, which are far too small to see directly through a light microscope. Elements have unique atoms and thus, unique properties. Atoms themselves are made of even smaller particles.
  2. Atoms may stick together in well-defined molecules or be packed together in large arrangements. Different arrangements of atoms into groups compose all substances.
  3. The physical characteristics and changes of solid, liquid, and gas states can be explained using the particulate model
  4. Distinguish among, explain, and apply the relationships among mass, weight, volume, and density

Standard 2. Life Science

  1. Changes in environmental conditions can affect the survival of individual organisms, populations, and entire species
  2. Organisms interact with each other and their environment in various ways that create a flow of energy and cycling of matter in an ecosystem

Standard 3. Earth Systems Science

  1. Complex interrelationships exist between Earth’s structure and natural processes that over time are both constructive and destructive
  2. Water on Earth is distributed and circulated through oceans, glaciers, rivers, ground water, and the atmosphere
  3. Earth’s natural resources provide the foundation for human society’s physical needs. Many natural resources are nonrenewable on human timescales, while others can be renewed or recycled.

Social Studies Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 1. History

  1. Analyze and interpret historical sources to ask and research historical questions
  2. The historical eras, individuals, groups, ideas and themes in regions of the Western Hemisphere and their relationships with one another

Standard 2. Geography

  1. Use geographic tools to solve problems
  2. Human and physical systems vary and interact

Standard 3. Economics

  1. Identify and analyze different economic systems
  2. Saving and investing are key contributors to financial well-being (PFL)

Standard 4. Civics

  1. Analyze the interconnected nature of the United States to other nations
  2. Compare multiple systems of governments

Visual Arts Grade Level Expectations:

Standard 1. Observe and Learn to Comprehend

  1. The characteristics and expressive features of art and design are used in unique ways to respond to two- and three-dimensional art
  2. Art created across time and cultures can exhibit stylistic differences and commonalities
  3. Specific art vocabulary is used to describe, analyze, and interpret works of art

Standard 2. Envision and Critique to Reflect

  1. Visual symbols and metaphors can be used to create visual expression
  2. Key concepts, issues, and themes connect the visual arts to other disciplines such as the humanities, sciences, mathematics, social studies, and technology

Standard 3. Invent and Discover to Create

  1. Plan the creation of a work of art
  2. Explore various media, materials, and techniques used to create works of art
  3. Utilize current, available technology to refine ideas in works of art

Standard 4. Relate and Connect to Transfer

  1. Critical thinking in the arts transfers to multiple lifelong endeavors
  2. Visual arts impact community, cultural traditions, and events
  3. Eco-art is a contemporary response to environmental issues
