Here are the basics of School Social Work Licensure:
What kind of degree/coursework do I need to become a CO School Social Worker?
- you must have an MSW (Masters degree in Social Work) from a regionally accredited university
- you must have coursework in the area of school and special education law (IDEA, 504, etc.): Higher Education Contacts/Courses (PDF) approved by CDE for licensure
- you must have 900 clock hours of internship/practicum time working with children and/or youth
- and, it is preferable to have had an internship or coursework specific to school social work, knowledge of exceptional learners, and educational disabilities.
What type of license is it?
- Initial Special Services License - Endorsed in School Social Work
- Professional Special Services License - Endorsed in School Social Work
Is there an application fee?
- Yes. Fees are subject to change and other fees may exist, for the latest information click here.
Do I need to take a test?
- The PLACE exam (School Social Work Portion) is a requirement. However, if you are an LCSW, this exam is waived.
How do I sign up for the PLACE ® Exam and how often do they offer the test?
- The PLACE® exams are offered 3 times per year, click here for the schedule
- To sign up for the PLACE® Exam, you must contact the licensing office at CDE - 303-866-6628 (follow the directions of the voice message)
How do I get an initial/provisional packet?
- Call 303-866-6628 follow the directions of the voice message and leave your name, address and the type of packet needed (Provisional/Initial, Professional, or Renewal) or go to: http://www.cde.state.co.us/cdeprof/Licensure_main.asp
Where do I apply for licensure?
- Once you have completely finished your application packet (incomplete packets are not accepted), you can mail or bring it to the Educator Licensing Office at the Colorado Department of Education, 201 East Colfax, Room 105, Denver, CO 80203
